if I get an iPad, how do I transfer music into it from my CDs?

My ancient ibook can't talk to an iPad, so I can't transfer via iTunes.

Just curious --  what do people do if they haven't got a computer?

Without a computer, their only option would be to purchase from the itunes music store.

Alternatively, they would rip music with itunes on a friend's computer, then load it into the ipad using their itunes.

You really should have a compatible computer and a Wi-Fi network and preferably iCloud to get the full benefit out of the iPad.

Having said that, the iPad with iOS 5 will work without connecting it to the computer. To get any media on it, you will need to purchase it and download it from iTune or rely on streaming services.

You are all right and Apple can add to its profits as a result :-)

Yes. must to use a Computer for ripping music from CD to MP3 format, then sync these MP3 musics to iPad via iTunes.
