DeferredInstall folder inside my System folder?

I noticed a folder called 'DeferredInstall' inside my System folder recently and it says that I don't have permission to view its contents when I try to open the folder. I don't remember seeing this folder when I first bought my Macbook so I wanted to check if it's normal or harmful and how it could have been created since I don't remember installing anything on the date the folder was created.

I also noticed the 'User Template' folder inside the library folder from the system folder has the same red icon in the bottom right corner indicating the same permission restriction.

Any ideas what caused this and if these folders/restrictions are normal and/or safe to delete?

Same for me: I discovered a DeferredInstall folder after migrating automatically from 10.5.8 system to my 10.7 brand new computer and don't have permissions to enter in it. Changing the permissions It looks there are some important files in that DeferredInstall folder (for instances coreservices) and I'm a little bit scared. Cannot find any information on internet.

I think the user template with prohibition icon is totally normal. Any computer got that one.

Could somebody help on the DeferredInstall folder?

Hi, I've just found the same folder in my system and it says it was created within the last few days, and also all the internal folders were also created at the same time ?? I can't find any info anywhere about it except here, which is strange ?!? I'm tempted to just delete it and see what happens, but ?!?! The only software I have been using intensively lately is Capture One Pro, and this won't boot up today, which makes me think they may be related. The only other thing I can think of is that I use a proxy server to watch the BBC.... hmm, any thoughts ?

So.... I couldn't wait for a response and went ahead and deleted it....... mainly after I'd noticed that they were just duplicate files and folders that were created more recently. I restarted and everything is back to normal and Capture One Pro has booted up. Now of course I'm paranoid that my system was hacked in some way shape or form, but I doubt it... (although there is always those niggling thoughts) It seemed that a lot of the files within the folders were security based so I wonder.......... Anyway, I am curious however to what it was and why it was created, so any more info would be appreciated.

Like most of you, I just discovered the "deferredInstall" folder in my System folder.

My first observation is that it is very small: about 250 mb for the whole thing, so space is not an issue.

My second observation: I logged into my computer as root to see the contents of the folder, and here is my best guess as to what it is. Mind you IT IS ONLY A GUESS, but not an unreasonable guess based on some of the files I saw in the sub-folders.

Apple is working to impliment "sandboxing" as a security measure. As I understand it, and I admit that's not very well, this isolates applications into their own space and protects them from corruption from other applications. It appears to me that what is in the "DefferredInstall" folder are components needed for the sandboxing feature when it comes available. The files include newer versions of various pref panes and other files that would normally go in the /System/Library folder. Several of them specifically have the word "sandbox" in the name, and many others have security-related names.

As I said, it's only a guess. Take it with a grain of salt.

I found this thread while googling for information about the deferredinstall folder. Though no one seems to specifically have a verified answer in this thread let me take a stab at it for anyone else landing here. I was in the middle of working on a project when an Apple dialog appeared saying that Apple's software updater was ready to install updates. I thought I had turned off automatic updates in Lion 10.7.5 but there it was. So I deferred it by clicking on the Later button.

A few minutes later I noticed the appearance of a DeferredInstall folder in the Finder, with a lock on it.

I have no verified proof but I think it its a reasonable guess that these are the updates to Apple Software that I deferred.

Note that I happened to have my System folder open at the time otherwise I'd never know it was there.
