External Hard Drive not showing up when plugged into USB Hub

If I plug it into a USB port directly on the macbook pro it shows up fine.

That sounds like you are trying to run the drive off a bus-powered USB hub ("bus-powered' = no separate power supply for the hub). The USB ports often cannot provide enough power to run a bus-power hub and drive, as the drive need a lot of power for its motor. It get worse if the hub also has a printer or other stuff attached.

Self-powered hubs (have their own power supply) are cheap and generally cure such issues.

The USB hub has a power supply. I said that in my first post.

I'll admit to having a "low-vision morning" today but, after seeing your response I kicked up the font size for a thorough reread and, using the Safari search function for the word "powered," it only shows up in my response.

As far as an action based on what I now know, I'd recommend returning the WD and trying another, or getting one from Other World Computing ( http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/ ). WD bare drives are excellent but their external enclosures are loosing street cred around here. I've never heard anyone complain about a OWC enclosure and OWC is a Mac-friendly vendor,
