iPhone appears in itunes but screen only say "iPhone".

I have an iphone second generation and i put an AT&T sim card from a newer phone into this phone. When i plugged it into itunes to set it up it shows up under the devices but all it says is "iPhone". The only action it will let me do is eject. the Setup Assistant wont appear and i need to know why. Thank You.
