Can my Macbook be in safe mode when I use migration assistant to transfer to my new macbook pro

My old MacBook Black running snow leopard is sluggish and flaky in normal mode. I want to transfer my applications and data to my new macbook pro running Lion. Can I use migration assistant with the old macbook in safe mode to do ther transfer?

MacBook Black 1.1, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

To use Migration Assistant you want to boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. You need a Firewire cable to connect the two computers via their Firewire ports.

Use Migration Assistant on your new computer.
