Spotlight search not working properly : IOS 5.0.1

Hi! Im new to this Apple community. Tried searching this forum cause same issue happened to me. What i did was i connected to wifi or 3G to access my mail. Spotlight worked but when i closed my mail it didnt work again so i tried unchecking mail in spotlight, reopened mail and closing it after and turned cellular data off if using 3g and turned off wifi if connected. This fixed the issue. Try it!

I'm having the same problem.

"To search Mail use the search feature within the Mail Application."

Asuming we're talking iPhone here, where do I find the search function in Mail? All I see are mailboxes.

Hello Erroll,

Just goto "All inboxes" and slide your finger to the top, you see the searchbar there.

This way you can search all your mailboxes, otherise you can use the function in a specific mailbox.

Thanks for the reply. I don't appear to have 'All Inboxes'. I just have a page with the header 'Mailboxes' and then 'Inbox,' 'Drafts', 'Sent', 'Trash', and a list of other mailboxes I've created, and then a footer that says 'MobileMe'.

I've slid my finger to the top (and all over) this page and can 't get the display you show above. I'm obviously missing something.

Ah! I just found the search bar. :-[ It's not visible until you pull down in a mailbox. It seems you can only search one mailbox at a time: Inbox OR Sent OR Trash, etc. It would be hand to be able to search all mail.

I had this problem, and found the following simple fix did the trick for me:

- deselect "Mail" from the spotlight search settings

- do a search

- then reselect "Mail".

Now it works fine, searching everything (including mail) without fail.

Not sure if this is a lasting fix or if the problem will reappear in time, but at least for now, it works great.

I tried deselecting Mail under spotlight search, opened and closed Mail and then did a search. Now 'Search Web' and Search Wikipedia are available, but 'Search iPhone' is not. This is a serious flaw in Apple's product.

Best Answer I found.

-Turn mail off in spotlight (in settings, spotlight, uncheck)

-do a hard reset (hold power down until it goes off)

-turn back on

-turn mail back on in spotlight

This has solved the issues I had on ipad and phone and have not seen any more complications yet

Also, Apple please fix these glitches!

I've a 4S iphne and today updated to IOS 5.1 and the problem remain!!

The solution of deactivate the mail search still works, but ....

this is because iphone takes more time than usual to search your mail content. Just unselect mail by going Setting-General-Spotliht Search. Always better to keep contacts, events, notes, messages which are very frequently used.

I faced similiar problem and its working perfect now.

the answer is posted by pfesser on feb 23 (also following posts by erroll). you can also search from any mail folder, one at a time. If you are looking for a deleted email, then you have to search directly in the trash folder. I just spoke to apple support which confirmed that spotlight search for emails uses the same indexing as a direct search from inside the email program. It may take longer for the spotlight search because it will also search the email servers and all folders. Just be patient and it will populate. If you know in which folder the email you are looking for is, then search directly that folder from the mail program.

My search iphone is not working similar in this case, i'm exactly following but not result. after i found , iprotect : disable search result is turn on, if you are using iprotect, turn off dsr, spotlight search is ok.

Hard boots and disabling and enabling mail in Spotlight were temporary fixes for me. Same with Wifi connections and whatnot. I got on the phone and restored my phone back to factory and the problem hasn't come back. It's been over 4 months now and Spotlight still works great.
