Hi,

I got my new iPhone 4s Saturday and the mic is not working if I make a call. The voice memo recorder and Siri do not work either. Strange thing is that making movies IS working, with sound. In my case it is not random, in fact, it is very consistent. Nothing helps. I have done a factory reset. Not connected to iCloud, nothing but the default apps. Doesn't work.

I got a new iPhone 4S on the day they were issued. It worked fine until I plugged in the headphones and tried to use the built-in microphone on the headphones for the call. That blew it. The mic works for Siri and for voice memos, dragon dictation, etc., but not for, you know, making phone calls. I called apple support (a paid call) and it took more than 30 minutes for them to basically get me to do a full wipe and reinstall. The phone worked OK until I put the headphones in again. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until then. I absolutely needed my phone then but it wouldn't work. I was traveling to the US for a funeral and had to have a conference call before I took off. My iPhone completely blew it. Then I had to reset it while I was in the US. I found out that you need to have your computer connected to wifi before it would work. Great. So much for the "computerless" iPhone. My parents did not have wifi and since my mother had died unexpectedly I wasn't so keen on just going out and installing wifi in their house just so my phone could work. My sister had to drive me to a nearby restaurant that had free wifi and we parked in the car park where I could get a signal. Then I was able to reset my phone. It works as a phone now. The headphones don't trouble it unless I try and use them in connection with a phone call. Still, this is a stupid software mistake that should be fixable, and it should be fixed quickly. I like my phone but honestly when I needed it the most it let me down in a major way.

I had this exact problem as well. I think I figured out the issue...at least with mine. The key things people keep saying is that their Voice recorder and Skype applications work and I think Skype, although a great ap, is causing the problem. I use my iphone4 with updated software, had Skype installed and use it from time to time. I also use the Bluetooth in my car. I think a compatability problem exists between Skype/Blutooth/iphone intribsic software. I went to use my iphone in the car on a skype call and it kept saying "no mic available" I thought nothing of it and shut off bluetooth and it worked...Skype worked that is and about 2 weeks elapsed until my phone took a ****. The day my phone stopped working I was in the airport in Detroit and the mic just stopped working. Skype was open in the background but I was on iphone service. What I think is going on is a fight for the mic and nobody wins and it gets allocated to Skype. A reset didn't help, a new phone helped until I reloaded my backup from itunes. Once the backup was on the phone it worked for a couple of min and then stopped. I brought it to Apple and they said sorry we can't help, we gave you a new phone and it's a software issue. I restored the phone once again this time I did not install Skype and it's worked fine ever since. Perhaps some of the other tricks people suggest like making love to the headphone jack with yout earphone plug or squeezing the top of the phone works for some reason on some phones but it didn't work on mine. This is obviously a software issue and I can say that because they gave me a new iphone and it worked until I put all my aps on it then it **** the bed.

Anyway I hope this helps..I spent roughly 10 hours between 2 trips to Apple, a trip to ATT for a new Sim card and messing with it at home.

Good luck and please let me know if your issue resolves or what resolved it for you in case I encounter it again...

Iphone 4 here mic works for everything but voice call i can use different types of apps to call with and it works but when using the regular gsm network calls doesn't work that not and a software or program would not cause it to hang up and not work. If it picks up your voice on them it should the gsm calls to.it hardware issue not software issue.
