me too....I just got my new iphone 4s, upgraded to the iOS 5.0.1., imported all the information (including contacts) from my previous iphone3 backup. All was fine until I did a backup to the icloud from my iphone. All the contacts just vanished! Now, what do I do? How do I recover the contacts? I do have the contacts in my old iphone3 but how do I get it off of that again?

I have a similar problem, and have investigated possible solutions I could find, and nothing worked. Here is the situation:

--Event: Upgrading my wife's iPhone 4 from iOS 4.x to 5.1

--Problem: All contacts were lost. Nothing in SIM card, Texts, Searchlight, etc. Phone numbers were retained (e.g., in favorites)

Details...

--I did back up the phone before upgrading, but can only find later backups to restore from (i.e., backups made after the upgrade). I tried a restore, but nothing meaningful changed. I cannot figure out how to go back the backup before the upgrade. (I don't have Time Machine, somehting suggested in another post.)

--There is no Outlook or other application synchronized from which to recover contacts

--We both sign into the same Apple account

--I did NOT turn on any kind of iCloud sync (which I think would have synced my contacts with my wife's phone). All iCloud services are turned off, though the upgrade did set up an iCloud account, which I have since deleted (just in case).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Me too, same problem here. Lost all contacts when upgraded to 5.1. Tried restoring from backup and still nada!

Itunes is supposed to be helpful but it just complicates everyone. From what I see there are so many people who lost all their contacts..

If anyone finds some kind of fix to this matter I'll be gratefull...

If it is the same problem I had way back when 5 came out the contacts are still there on your phone they are just not being displayed. I think if you google you will find out about the bug. I stumbled across a workaround that made them visible again...

- Go into your messages (texting) app and find a conversation from someone who is one of your contacts

- At the top of the conversation, select the 'Contact Info' button

- Make a meaningless change to the contact...add an extra period in the note, add an extra zero to a phone number, whatever.

- Save and exit

- go to your contacts app....they should all be back

- go to whatever contact you made the meaningless change to and undo it

This has just happened to me also. I downloaded the latest itunes and backed up my iphone 3G. It said that it was completed and showed that there was a back up before I agreed to update the iphone software. After the update restore my phone was missing all my contacts, music amd apps. It ramdomly chose some of the pictures that I had on the phone previously but was missing the majority.

I am seriously hoping for some direction on how to restore the now missing information, especially the contacts! Every time since that I have tried to restore, nothing happens or it just gets worse (now no pictures).

Can anyone please tell me where to find the missing contacts?! There were no texts to go back to, no numbers, nothing...
