How can I use my iPhone 3Gs on T-Mobile?

Currently my iPhone 3Gs is on iOS 5.01. I'd like to use it on the T-Mobile network. What are the steps required to make it happen?

I think it's obvious that I need to jailbreak the phone. However, googling around around it is unclear whether there is a reliable (untethered) jailbreak for 5.0x.

Do I need to downgrade the OS? If so, to what version and how? Any additional steps I need to take?

Thanks.

Assuming you're in the US:

1. Discussion of jailbreaking is forbidden here.

2. You can NOT downgrade the OS.

3. IF you were to find a way to unlock the phone, you will not get:

3G data

MMS messaging

Visual Voice Mail

Support of any kind from any official/legitimate source.

If you are NOT in the US, contact your carrier to see if they offer unlocking. iPhones are supported on T-Mobile networks in many countries. The U.S. T-Mobile network is not fully compatible with the iPhone.
