Jody,

to be able to advise you, we need to know more:

  • What is the exact error message you get, when iTunes says i need to update ?
  • What is your current iTunes version, your MacOS version, and your computer model, so that we can see if an update should be possible for you?

Regards

Léonie

P.S. This page tells you the requirements your system should meet to be able to upgrade to iTunes 10.5 for MacOS: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Hi Leonie:

So, apparently my iPad software needs to be updated to 5.0.1. When I hit "Update" in iTunes for my iPad, it says I need a newer version of iTunes - 10.5.1 to update my iPad. So I hit "Download iTunes" in the dialogue box. It checks for software and tells me my software is up to date. Then we start this whole process over again.

My current iTunes version is:10.2.1

Mac OS version is: OS X. Its Lion 10.7.2 and it's a Macbook 13 inch.

Jodi,

My current iTunes version is:10.2.1

is that the iTunes Version on your MacBook or on your iPad? What is your iPad-iTunes Version?

If your current iTunes Version on your MacBook is 10.2.1, then update the iTunes on your MacBook first, by hitting "Check for Updates.." in the iTunes menu on your MacBook.

You will need the most recent version of iTunes on your MacBook to update your IOS devices, see this support article on software update for IOS devices: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

, hit download now, and it said "thank you for downloading". didnt actually download it. not sure what to do.

Safari in Lion is very discreet about downloading - maybe you did not notice that the file is actually there. Did you check the downloads panel (revealed by pressing the down-arrow button in the upper right corner of the Safari Toolbar, during download you see a progress bar below this arrow)? After the Download you should see the iTunes installer disk image at the top of the drop down panel, if the download succeeded. if you click on the looking glass to the right it will reveal the installer.

Thanks. I did it all. I watched it download, I clicked it in downloads after to start the installer, I watched it install and then tell me my install was successful. I restarted the computer. I went to iTunes and and tried to update my iPad software. It told me I couldn't update my iPad software because my iTunes software is not up to date and would I like to download the latest version of iTunes. I said yes, it checked for software updates and told me I don't have any.

Back to where I started from. Any other options?

Anyone? iTunes and iPad expert needed.

Jodi, I am running out of ideas, sorry. And right now I don't have access to an iPad to check what may be happening. What is the iPad model you have? and the current IOS version on your iPad?

Thanks. I did it all. I watched it download, I clicked it in downloads after to start the installer, I watched it install and then tell me my install was successful.

Did you check if the newly iTunes version is running on your Mac? Which version do you see in the About-panel if you open iTunes and show the panel from the itunes menu, with

iTunes -> About iTunes?

Does it say iTunes 10.5.1?

Really? If (any) iTunes is running, quit it.

Open the Applications Folder and select your second iTunes in the Finder, type (cmd)⌘-I for "Get Info".

Is that second iTunes an Application, which version, what is the size?

If it looks like an Application, try to launch it by double clicking and see if it will run. If it runs successfully (again check the about-panel), then quit it again and delete the old version "iTunes --Macintosh HD"

iTunes software won't update.
