I'm suddenly having trouble connecting to the internet only via ethernet.
I've had the computer for about 2 years now (it's from mid 2009) and I've never had a problem like this before.
Version: 10.7.2 // Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo // Memory: 4GB
My connection still works fine with Wi-Fi but the wireless connection in the building is extremely slow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

When did this change, not being able to connect through a wired connection? Are you working at home, or from the office?
Problems causing this could be if you have proxy, and these settings are not correct in you browser. Also, if you use mac filtering you could have a problem. You wifi and ehternet adapter have different mac adresses. You need to allow both in that case.
I'm in a dorm room in university and the change just happened about an hour ago and I can't figure out how to fix it.
I've looked through a bunch of forums and read a bunch of troubleshooting guides but nothing so far has really solved the problem.
I really have no idea why the change happened because I wasn't fiddling around with any settings
If you go to network settings. Is the ethernet cable connected? If it is try the network utility and go to ping. Try to ping google. This way you will know if it's a connection problem or something else.
Yes it says the ethernet cable is connected. When I tried to ping google i got this:
ping: cannot resolve www.google.com: Unknown host
Do you have an ip on your wired connection? And how does this compare to your ip on your wireless connection?
If you wireless ip adress is 172.20.x.x then your wired ip should be similar eg 172.20.x.x. If this is the case and you can't even ping google (try pinging 216.239.51.99 to be sure) then the problem most likely isn't on your end.
It shows an ip adress for both the wired and wireless conenctions
Wireless is 172.17.x.x
Wired is 172.19.x.x
& when I pinged 216.239.51.99 this time, I got this:
--- 216.239.51.99 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
Oh and by the way (I should have mentioned this ealier) I tried out the wired conenctions in other rooms and they also did not work with my laptop but they worked with other laptops.
Well. Okay. If others laptops do work, I stand corrected.
You have some "profile like" settings in your network (the location). You could try to create a new profile for ethernet. Going back to default settings. Try that.
Other than that:
Check if tcp/ip is configured via dhcp. That should be standard. Also check the speed of the connection which has option of 10, 100, 1000 or automatic. If it's set to 1000 and your network doesn't support this it can go haywire.
How would I set them back to default? I can't find that anywhere.
I don't think it has anything to do with the network not being able to support the speed because I've been here using the wired connection since early september and it has been working fine since then up until now.
