AIM service error occurred...

Hey there -

I setup my iChat account with my @me.com address in the account setup pane. I selected "me.com" fromt he drop down menu, put in my email address and password, and hit continue. This setup my account and brought up my buddies that i had already added and I was able to chat with my friends, see when they were idle, they could see me and chat with me, ie. it worked like it should.

This morning it suddently stopped working. I can see when my buddies are on, i can see when they go from idle to active, they can send me messages and i will recieve them, but i CANNOT send them messages. I deleted the account and set it up again and it worked just fine for about 5 minutes and then went back to the same error message - "There was an error with me.com. The message “****” could not be delivered. An AIM service error occurred." I am using my mobileme account to use iChat and I was trying to speak to my wife who uses Google Talk. This has worked flawlessly for the past few months and then this morning all of a sudden i'm getting this. Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Ben

HI,

In the iChat Menu > Preferences >Accounts > Server settings for your @me.com account change the port from 5190 to 443

You have to be logged out to change this.

If this does not work turn Off SSL as this server goes Off line now and then.

Your @me.com name is a valid AIM Screen Name

Your wife's googlemail name is a valid Jabber name.

Normally these two services are exclusive of each other.

However some of the social Networks such as Goolge and Facebook are allowing people to add AIM buddies to their Lists and chatting to them.

Once they are added to the Google person's List it seems you can text chat from an AIM Login in iChat.

This obviously needs Google (or Facebook) to keep up the AIM Link at their end to amke this work.

Hi:

Suffered with the same iChat problem when attempting to send a mobile message using my AIM account. The iChat error, "The message ... could not be delivered. An AIM service error occurred.", started occurring about a week ago in the middle of a mobile messaging conversation. Thought it was originally an AIM network problem, but it turned out be a software problem local to my machine. Currently using Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and iChat 5.0.3 (745). The only solution that I found to work was to remove the iChat application and all iChat property list (.plist) files, reinstall the old iChat software via the Mac OS X Install Disk, download latest version of Mac OS X Update Combo, and install to bring iChat up to the current version. I am not certain, but the problem may have been created by installing the separate AOL AIM 1.0.9 software.

FILES TO REMOVE

/Applications

iChat.app

/Users/username/Library/Preferences

  • com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist
  • com.apple.iChat.Jabber
  • com.apple.iChat.plist,
  • com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist
  • com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist

REINSTALL iChat

Using the original Mac OS X Install DVD Mac OS X v 10.6 Snow Leopard

  1. Insert your Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD (NOTE: If you are running Parallels, you will have to shutdown virtual machine and exit the application for the Mac OS X Install DVD to mount.)
  2. Open the Optional Installs folder.
  3. Double-click "Optional Installs.mpkg".
  4. Click Continue - "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed."
  5. Click Continue - "Welcome to the Optional Installs Installer"
  6. Click Continue and Agree - "Software License Agreement"
  7. Open Applications under Package Name and Select iChat only and Click Continue - "Custom Install on ..."
  8. Click Install and iChat 5.0.1 (old version) will be installed in your Utilities folder.
  9. Download latest Update Combo version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard; in this case, Mac OS X Update Combo v1.1, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399. The standard Mac OS X update procedure using Software Update... from the Apple menu will not recognize the old version of iChat and will not update. The old version turns on but will not send messages under Mac OS X 10.6.8. This is a large download and will take some time. It is illogical to me that one has to independently download and install a 1 GB OSX update to fix a 53.6 MB corrupted application and that Software Update cannot recognize that a missing or incorrect version of an application is present.
  10. Open the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8 disk image and double-click the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8.pkg
  11. Click Continue - "Welcome to the Mac OS X Update Combined Installer"
  12. Click Continue - "Important Information"
  13. Click Continue and Agree - "Software License Agreement"
  14. Click Install - "Standard Install on ..."
  15. Upon completion Click Restart.
  16. Once computer reboots, Start iChat and you will have to re-establish your messaging account. You can add the others under iChat Preferences under the Accounts tab.

This is overkill, nonetheless, it is only solution that worked for me. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Couple of Notes

re 8 - iChat will be in the Applications Folder not the Utilities Folder

IF the Original (As in the Faulty updated one) is there you will be asked about replacing it.

It will only be version 5.0.1 depending which version of the OS Install Disks you have.

If you downloaded Snow Leopard at it's original release and made a Install Disk then iChat will be version 5

Same if your computer came with Install Disks at that time.

If you computer came out a little latter in Snow Leopard's Life you may have an Install Disk that is OS 10.6.3 (that's when iChat was updated to version 5.0.1).

Users Tip on Subject

The Original Poster had an Issue talking from an AIM login to a GoogleTalk ID (not something iChat normally does but can be sorted external to iChat to make it happen).

You seem to be talking about using the AIM SMS forwarding which only works in AIM logins and needs the computer to be set up as if in the United States and the phone must be on an United States carrier that supports/Accepts AIM SMS forwarding.

That obviously requires the AIM server to work, the SMS forwarding to work, the Phone to stay connected and so on.

Any failure of any of the connection stages are going to cause problems. Those outside AIM's control are going to be the biggest as Info as what data has been sent will not match what arrives at the phone.

I am surprised that just deleting the com.apple.AIM.plist (and restarting ichat to Force the Login to refresh) did not solve this.

(There again some issues my not have been iChat's or AIM's)

AIM app Install and iChat Access

If it was anything related to the to the Install of the AIM for Mac app then it is most likely to be in the Keychain

Open Keychain Access in the Applications/Utilities folder

Navigate to the Login Account's Passwords and check the Screen Name you were using.

(Double click to bring up the Info panel)

Check the Access tab is allowing iChat as well as the new app. (New installs should not change things....)
