There has always been and will always be slang and informal usage. The fact that I, or anyone else, uses situationally appropriate slang or abbreviations, doesn't mean that we can't or don't use formal language when that is appropriate. Language is a consensus. Comparing informal speech to an imposed limitation on thought like Newspeak is, at best, an overreaction. A living language evolves and changes. However, you're in good company. Every generation seems to have those who dispair of the current state of the language.

Sorry, but I get upset over the abbreviation and mangling of the written word. It makes me think of the novel "1984" by George Orwell and the language "Newspeak" he created for the story. One character in the book, Syme, says admiringly of the shrinking volume of the new dictionary: "It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words."

You can make your own shortcuts as well as the ones they put in for you.

No worries - if someone hadn't mentioned it in another post, I wouldn't have known about it either. This is how we learn...it's a great feature!

I think it is a new thing to the IO5 update. I only recently discovered it and have made my own. You go to your settings > general > keyboard and it should be in there !
