Adding Temporary Wi-Fi to iPad 1

For 51 weeks of the year I have access to Wi-Fi and so do not have 3G on my iPad. This is fine. For one week I am on holiday on a small island where they have only just discovered Wi-Fi and it can be accessed from a couple of cafes a few miles from where we stay. Now my daily newspaper (The Guardian) has stopped printing its international edition. I have their lovely iPad app. but can't find any gismo which would enable me to get access to the internet for a week. There's no USB port.

Does anyone know of any other work around methods for temporary access please?

You need a "mobile hotspot" that will receive the cellular signal where you stay and 'convert' them to wifi that your iPad can connect to. Verizon makes one called a mifi. Check the carrier where you holiday and see if they offer one.

I'm probably a bit slow getting this! As far as I can see I can buy a portable "hotspot" - at a significant price. But then I also need a contract. That's where it gets difficult if I'm only after a week once a year. I'll invest in the hardware, but I don't want a monthly all year round fee as well. I've found some sites that do rentals but they seem aimed at business people who will pay vast amounts and then put it on expenses - plus I can't find any that seem to recognise Formentera - small Balearic island.
