ftp question ?

I'm hoping someone out there has some experience with this , i have an ftp server set up on my windows computer(XP), and am trying to connect from behind my router with my PB . I was not familiar enough with running an ftp client with terminal , so i purchased a license for Transmit . Why is it that i can connect to the server only when the firewall on the PB is turned off ? I've tried connecting with the firewall on , and ftp service enabled/disabled on for the powerbook and constantly get banned . I uncheck the UDP transfer window and Stealth Mode and still no connection , it just hangs and gets me banned . What command in Transmit or OSX do i have to disable ? am i missing a tweak ? As soon as i disable the firewall i'm able to connect . I've also tried enabling the PB as a server , but the upload speed from the windows box drastically drops . (PB>server 500+KB/sec download speed) (win ftp client>PB server 40 KB/sec upload) I'm baffled . I have tried several different ftp clients on the PB and i like the GUI of Transmit the best . It also seems to be stablest program of the lot for me and i'm convinced its a UNIX thing in OSX .

Please shed some light i'm baffled . Anybody have any hints ?

Yes, you're locked out by your firewall.

Enabling the FTP server on your PB doesn't necessarily mean you're unlocking the required port for Transmit, since it might have it's own, custom port settings. Are you getting a message similar to "connection died on port xyz"? Try enabling that particular port manually or even try entering the standard settings.

Ok , I still cant get it to work from the behind the firewall ... i've enabled it to passive mode , opened the ports and still cant get it to download from my server . Its connecting , but i get a message saying "could not retrieve file listing , Error accepting data connection. this could be a problem with firewall or proxy configuration, Try passive mode" . I have however started using terminal . And in terminal , ftp> connects immediately producing all the directories on the root .I need to learn more commands so i can move around once i get logged on. I love this machine . Until i get a little more familiar with the ftp terminal , i will just have to turn off the firewall , download the files and turn it back on . By the way , i have set up port forwarding on the router for the mac . I thought it might be an issue , but it hasn't seemed to improve anything . I'll post back with an update.

I once had a similar problem connecting to my SSH server using Transmit (3.0 I think). All I did was create a new "favorite" preset for it and it inexplicably started to work, with no problems thereafter. Still, I look forward to seeing your update.
