  • Use Finder to locate the Mac OS X Lion installer, right-click and select "Show Package Contents."
  • Find the SharedSupport folder and look for a file named "InstallESD.dmg." This is the Lion Boot Disc image.
  • Copy the "InstallESD.dmg" file to another folder, such as your desktop.
  • Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button.
  • Select the "InstallESD.dmg" copy as the image to burn, insert a DVD, and in a few minutes, you will have a brand new Lion Boot Disc.

If you want a Lion installer on DVD, thumb drive or HD partition you will need to download the Lion installer. The file you need to make an installer will not be on your replacement Lion HD.

This MacWorld article explains how to get the precious InstallESD.dmg file needed to make an installer to burn to DVD, or copy to a thumb drive or HD partition when you have preinstalled Lion.

Then the only way would be to buy it for $29 from the App Store and Download it to your computer. But wouldn't you be better backing up your whole Hard Drive to an external drive with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner? Why do you need a copy of Lion on DVD? If you want to install it on another computer running an older system, then you legally have to buy a copy in the first place. Is there something I am missing here?

Cheers

If your machine came with Lion, you cannot make a bootable DVD.

You cannot purchase Lion in the AppStore to make one.

You can't even use a Lion boot DVD made on another Mac, because the Lion AppStore download is tailored to each machine with specific hardware drivers.

Lion has two partitions on the drive standard (actually three with hidden EFI and four if you have Bootcamp), one is the Lion OS X Partition and the other is the Lion Recovery Partition.

The Lion Recovery Partition is the only way to download a fresh copy of Lion from Apple's servers, the other method is to buy a $69 Lion USB Thumb drive.

You CAN make a Carbon Copy Cloner of your Lion OS X Partition to a blank external Disk Utility formatted, 1 Partition, Option: GUID Partition Table Format: OS X Extended (Journaled) powered drive which is "hold the option key bootable", but doesn't contain the Lion Recovery Partition and isn't required to boot the computer.

You CAN make a Lion Recovery USB key using the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant from Apple, which copies your present Lion Recovery Partition to the USB (1GB+) formatted the same GUID and OS X Extended (J) as a external drive clone above.

You CAN hold option key and boot from the Lion Recovery USB which will allow you to install the Lion Recovery Partition, which will then allow you to either install Lion into the Lion OS X Partition or "reverse clone" Lion from a "hold option key booted" external drive clone.

You cannot clone TimeMachine, Filevaulted or Bootcamp Windows partitions (well you can with Bootcamp, it's not going to boot if you do)

Supposedly Carbon Copy Cloner is working on a beta version that will also clone the Lion Recovery Partition at the same time as the Lion OS X Partition, until that occurs, you have to use the Lion Recovery USB method.

I've laid things out with graphics here what you can do, but getting Lion on a boot DVD is not going to work unless someone creates a program that can take the "essentials" of a Lion install and make a bootable DVD of it like what can be done with Linux.
