I hate iCloud!!!

I'm so frustrated with iCloud. Apple has typically been so user friendly, but after reading countless discussions, it appears to me they dropped the ball. I've heard complaints of losing contacts, calendars not syncing, etc. and I've tried to find solutions, but honestly I just keep seeing a variety of ways to "FIX" problems that shouldn't be this difficult. I'm quitting iCloud until Apple comes out with a comprehensive explanation of how to gain all this information back without jumping through hoops. I shouldn't have to switch this off and then back on and then reset my phone or iPad in hopes that it will bring back my calendar entries over and over while then putting multiple entries of the same information on the device. I should be able to count on my iCal on my iMac syncing with what's on all of my devices. This is what I consider my calendar "home base" since it was included with the computer. Without iCloud, it always did with no problems other than the fact that I had to periodically plug my devices in to sync things up. My husband and I work rotating shifts and we depend on our calendar information being accurate so we know who's doing what and when. Unless this becomes more simplified to use like the plug and sync, I'm done with it.

Sorry Apple, you dropped the ball on this one.

It also said that I have 29 days to...who knows what? To download the originals to your Mac. Rechecking the boxes does not change this.If you read what I posted and follow Apple's instructions, you will see that there are no boxes to check.

I need iCloud, which is why it frustrates me. Sync has become worthless. Every time I update software, I am warned that there are items purchased on my iPads or iPhones that are not backed up, but I have no idea what that can be because I never purchase applications from those devices. It seems that this is just an automatic message. It will continue to say that until you go to the menu at the top of the iTunes screen, and click on File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.

I regularly get messages saying that iCloud is full, but when I trim it back it fills up again.

When I speak of the promise to have items available across devices, I am speaking of Apple's advertising.

Though my email message preferences say that my email from addresses in my contact list are not junk, I find dozens of messages from friends are being put into junk. Software upgrades have resulted in this. If you are having issues with the Mail app, that is an entirely different topic.

For more years than you probably have been alive, all these things worked beautifully, but now I feel that I am in a constant argument with my computer. Since we both have had experience with the very first Macs in the 1980's that is doubtful.

In any case, I have an appointment at the Genius Bar where I will bring a list of misbehaviors. You have convinced me to stay away from this site. Mission accomplished. Probably not a bad idea since you don't seem to want to take any of the advice that has been provided.

Best of luck with that. Do you believe you'll get different answers there?

but now I feel that I am in a constant argument with my computer.

To me, this explains much.

It is estimated there are 850 million active iCloud accounts.

If iCloud was as broken as you believe it to be, would you not think there would be a little more heard about it in the news?

Do you not believe that Apple, as a company, has business's largest red target on its back? That there are legions of non Apple fans out in the wild, looking for most anything to attack Apple on or about? Where is the 60 Minutes piece on iCloud? New York Times? CNET? CNN? USA Today?

The most damning buzz I find about iCloud is that can be confusing and non-intuitive.

So can I.

i will never buy another apple product and am so sorry I did. The only good product is the iPhone. The rest is so difficult and non-intuitive. I have read several pages and trying to clean out my iCloud. What a scam. There is always something in the instructions that doesn't relate to what I see on the screen and they make it so difficult. I swear I will never buy another Apple product ( except my iPhone) in my life

I couldn't agree with you more. the ICLOUD Stinks. I saw the new desktop icloud sync and then all of a sudden my icloud is full. I can't find the files to delete them and it feels like my computer is being held hostage. Now that I've turned sync off, I've lost every file and can't get them back. I am starting completely from scratch on my computer. This is not a good feature. I liked looking at my files on the computer but can't do that anymore. Not too helpful.

Sorry Apple, you dropped the ball on this one.

Except that everything worked out perfectly for me, and many others, your problems are just that, yours. Read the documentation carefully and reinstall, Lion works, iCloud works.

Well I'm glad for you, but after reading many posts, it seems I'm not the only one having problems. At this point, things have gotten so out of wack on my calendars, I'm afraid to reinstall for fear that I will further mess up what I have. And from what I read, my desktop iCal will not be incorporated into the iCloud syncing which makes it obsolete while I've always considered it my home base calendar.

To go through the installation process, Apple would lead you to believe that getting everything up and running is as simple as installing Lion, signing up with iCloud and boom, everything will work seamlessly. So I will go back and read the documentation carefully, but I still don't think they've handled issues with iCloud well considering how many problems I've read about without any real response from Apple other than an OS5 update to resolve battery drain issues.

Thanks so much for your helpful comment.

I am having issues and hoped that I might talk with someone who felt the same way or experienced the same problems that could be helpful. You are not being helpful. Instead, I am wasting my time with someone who seems to enjoy poking fun at those that aren't having as wonderful an experience with iCloud as you. I am truly sorry I ever wrote the first message. I will not be participating in a discussion again because of this experience.

I have the same (and I hope temporary) problems with iCloud, and I turned it off: It worked perfectly, but I made mistakes; different, too complicated new way of thinking. And besides, I do not need it urgently, although I thought so in the beginning. Now I am studying the iCloud and will restart it later. Find my iPhone works perfectly and the rest has to wait....😕

Nov 15, 2011 8:09 AM in response to Lexiepex

I agree Lex. After reading through several of the troubleshooting guides, I realized you will always need to plug it in (to a power source) to back up anyway so why not just continue syncing as I always did. And even they admit it doesn't back up everything so they suggest still backing it up with iTunes periodically. I think the concept is a good one, but overall I think they didn't anticipate some of the issues that have occured. I will study it further as well, but for now, I will be blissfully behind the times.

Nov 15, 2011 8:12 AM in response to Lexiepex

Personally I'm sticking with MobileMe for as long as I can.

iCloud is missing features that I use daily and doesn't work with pre-Lion which leaves 2/3 of my Mac network unsupported.

I just hope that by the time MobileMe is turned off that all the issues with iCloud have been resolved.

You are missing the point, there is no endemic issue with Lion, only with individual Lion installations, that means that they are fixable with the correct approach, complaining is all well and good but what have you done to troubleshoot your installation other than come here?

Your initial post is all complaint and no action, if you want help then be specific about it.

TZ

My sentiments exactly.

I started with .mac 5 years ago and still use it successfully with 7 Mac laptops ranging from an original iBook to a MacBook Air. If I join iCloud I will be limited to use of only 3 of these machines.

I too will wait till the last minute to convert in hopes that something better will evolve.

What is new is not necessarily needed, and what is old is not automatically obsolete.

I hate iCloud!!!
