My iMac keeps freezing up, forcing me to hard power off. Typically when I have several programs open: Mail, Safari, many time iTunes. Safari will often have a couple of tabs open. I notice that my available memory keeps dropping, constantly using FreeMemory to release ram. Have repaired permissions, repaired boot disc, cleaned the computer. Hard drive has 190 GB free. computer has max ram at 2 GB, running on 2ghz Dual Core.
iMac G4 17, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
You say you have an iMac G4. Is that correct? Those models can't run OS 10.6.
Go to /Applications/Utilities/Console and launch it. From the Sidebar choose system.log. Then copy & paste the lines around the time of the last event in your reply.
Well I do have a G4.1 running OS 10.6.8 - maybe it shouldn't work, but it does, kinda of course.

I tried MacKeeper, now I can't seem to delete it. I only have Trial version.
Well, well, if you do have a G4, even a G5, running 10.6 Snow Leopard, then you are an expert, and you do not need any advice from the rest of us.
Otherwise, freezing may have multiple causes... if you could be more precise and more accurate, perhaps we could figure out something.
Well that is very strange indeed as no G4 or G5 can go beyond OS 10.5.8.
However you may have an iMac 4,1 (which is a very different beast) which can run 10.6.
For sure he cannot have G4 or G5, but perhaps saw something as you suggest.

Yes, well what threw everyone off was calling it a G4 iMac, which is incapable of running Lion.
You actually probably have this Mac
Boot from your Lion recovery volume (holding the R key) and re-install Lion. This should not touch any of your data or settings, just system files but you should have a good backup before you do.
I apologize for the confusion, I misused the G4 reference.
I have Snow Leopard, not Lion, should I just do a re-install of the OS from the original disk? Will this cause any loss of other data?

Yes, you can re-install "in place" in SL but before you try that the 10.6.8 Combo may be able to repair it.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Also, if you have further problems pls post in theSnow Leopard 10.6 froum, not here in Lion.

Thanks for the advise. I have repaired permissions, repaired the disc (both from the install disc), reinstalled, and applied the 10.6.8 Combo update, plus all others. Appeared that my iLife 09 and iWork 09 needed to be re installed also.
So far so good. Will report back if I have continued difficulties. Thanks for everyone's help.
