I can't send an sms/text from iphone 4S (iOS5.01)

I can't seem to send sms text messages to a specific VALID contact from my iPhone 4S (iOS 5.01). I get a "message send failure" indication.

I have inserted the full area code, and try everything listed from Apple Knowledge Base support.apple.com/kb/HT1337

I have also tried restoring my iPhone 4S, attempting to send an SMS from a fresh phone without restoring my back up and nothing seem to work?

Its definetly not an issue with my carrier, as I tried inserting my sim card onto my old iPhone 4 (iOS 5.01), and I am able to send the SMS.

Does anyone know what could be causing it? Is anyone having the same issue?

Please help. Thanks.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5

Below is a summary of what I done:

  1. Check Signal - Done
  2. Reset Network Settings - Done
  3. Check Carrier - Done (Am Able to send Text via old Iphone 4)
  4. Verify that every phone number in your contacts list includes an area code. (Done)
  5. When sending to existing contacts, ensure that your contacts include the full phone number, and not just the information needed to dial locally.(Done)
  6. If you have recently ported your number from another carrier, please contact your current carrier to verify that the porting process has completed successfully. (Done: This is an old carrier, it's not an issue as I am able to use the same sim card to send text via my old iphone 4)
  7. Perform a full restore back to factory original setting (Done)

I have the same issues- bought a 4S yesterday and no longer have SMS texting capability. Took the SIM out and put it back into my Iphone 4 with OS 5.0 and all is okay. Put it back inoto the 4S with OS 5.01 and SMS does not work again.

Also have noticed that I have had to pair the 4S a number of iems with my car bluetooth as it looses recognition. I have to delete the Iphone from my car bluetooth and then re- establish.

Definetly and issue with the latest update of OS 5.01.

I did what corafromhicktown did and removed the area code on just one number. No idea why, but removing the area code from one number and then texting that number seemed to solve it, at least for me. Now I can send and receive texts to and from anyone.

I also did what customer support told me to do, that is, wiped off my sim card, restarted device and called ##002#. However, I really don't think that did anything, as nothing started working until I removed the area code.

Some specs:

iPhone 4S

iOS 5.0.1 (9A405)

Carrier: O2 UK

Location: Nottingham, United Kingdom

Hi All,

I've had a few user with this problem at work.

the prob seems to be related to the contacts in the phone addressbook & sms addressbook interaction

there were reports that the area code the brackets may be the cause.

My initial workaround was to create a new contact which workedon one or two phones that had a problem texting particular contacts that had previously worked

I have found the following:

when a new contact is created with the same name as another they merge (occaisionally fixing the bug)

if the contacts merge you may see a section in the contacts page called "linked cards"

if so check that the number does not include an area code in the UK it's +(country code)(area code)(number)

+44 (0) 7123456789 so the "(0)" should be removed on all cards/contact info pages relating to that contact

IOS actually inserts the brackets & in the UK the area code should be omitted when a country code is used, if the country code is not used the area code must be ... kinda XOR

It worked for us .... hope it helps you guys

I was having the same issue on both my 3GS and now that I have a 4GS you would think this would be an easy fix for the iOS update. Here is what I did.

I deleted the contact and then readded them. I haven't received a message yet regarding the Error 10 digit or short code required to send the text. Unfortunately if this is required for all contacts it is going to be very frustrating since the format is a little ridiculous in my opinion.

I just received a text back from the person I had issues texting so it worked. Try deleting the contact and then putting them back in with the just the area code (since that is 10 digits)

Good luck!
