iPhone 4S speaker volume low

Hi everybody

I received my iPhone 4S two days ago. Since the first day the speaker volume is way too low. I applied several measures to try getting rid of the the problem, such as upgrading to iOS 5.01, restarting and resetting, or bringing the phone into recovery mode to reinstall the OS. All with no success, sound is still very low und muffled. I have done an internet search in order to find out whether some more users experience the same issue on the 4S, but it seems not to be a common problem. Does anybody have an idea how to fix it other than send it in to Apple and get a replacement?

Having the same issue...activated thed phone this morning and when I place/receive a call the volume of the person speaking is hard to hear even after increasing volume to the max. Any other troubled souls out there?

Does not seem to be the same issue. Bottom speaker does not work properly, but having no problems so far when placing a call.

I bought my 4s on the release day for USA. I though I was losing my hearing for the last couple weeks. But long story short, I went to apple store and they gave me a new phone. I have a friend that had his happen to him also. He got a new one from apple as well. We will see how long the new one last.

I have now contacted Apple's support hotline. They have initially been suspicious whether this is a user error. After I explained the issue to them in detail, they agreed to take the device back for exchange. Well, at least the support staff never heard of the problem.

Agreed. Remove the plastic completely - it's a packaging thing, and serves no other purpose other than to convince new users that their speaker isn't loud enough.

There is/was no plastic on the bottom speaker! Removing the plastics on both the front and the back was one of the first things I have done after receiving the phone. As I wrote in one of the above posts I had no issues with the top speaker, but with the bottom speaker. The sound seemed to come from the inside of the phone, as if the speaker was attached the wrong way. Does not seem to be a common problem, but that Apple agreed to replace the device without even testing it shows that the problem is known to the company.

I'm having the same problem! My local Apple Store said the new iOS 5.02 will fix the problem!

Hopefully...But I rather doubt that it was a software issue in my case. I have received the replacement unit today and it works fine. I would recommend to you to also claim a replacement when your phone is not working as it should.

Looks like my new phone lasted about a month. I just went back to Apple and he said it's very rare that just happened to me twice. But now I got another new phone let's see how long this one last

I also have a very low speaker volume from the ear speaker I have had it replaced twice and still the volume is low. Never had a problem with the 4g just the 4gs.
