Hi rtpeter1 ...

Error 1603: If you receive this error and the iOS device is not automatically placed into recovery mode, it may be necessary to do so manually. Refer to iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to restore for steps on placing iPhone into forced recovery mode. Also, remove the IPSW and attempt to restore again. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user.

I had the same issue with an iPod classic, it just would not unmount or restore the iPod. After messing around with my mac and the iPod, using disk utility and various other tools for days, i had almost given up when i decided to try something else. I have parallels on my mac, which enables you to run Windows XP, downloaded itunes for XP and restored it with that itunes running on XP. Hey presto it worked!!!!

I guess macs are not great for everything!!!!!

I expect you could do the same by useing another windows based computer (yuck) from a friend or family member!

Good Luck!!!
