Does the phone appear in itunes? or is there some kind of lock on that too?

To fix your problem you have to restore your iPhone. Just be sure it's backed up to iTunes, and click the restore button in iTunes, and when prompted, restore it from backup. That's it.
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device on the computer that you Usually Sync with...

plug it into itunes, select it in the side bar, and click 'restore'
