Interesting variation after working fine for weeks. In iMessage: the 'send' button remains inactive (not allowing me to send the text in the window) unless I include a photo. LOL Makes for slow conversations. I have closed the app. signed out/in. hard reset. No joy. Suggestions? My iPhone 4S continues to work well with iMessage and the text thread does show in both devices.

Don't feel bad, John. Both my wife and I made the same mistake..... typing your message on the SUBJECT line doesn't work!
FYI, to avoid that mistake in the future, it is possible to turn off the Subject field in the settings (Settings/Messages/Show Subject Field Off)
