Hello, a dumb question probably.
I imported some photos into aperture on my imac and am delighted to see they have appeared on my macbook.
A couple of questions.
Can I choose some older photos from my library to do this?
Are the ones that have downloaded to my macbook here for good or will the dissapear after 30 days? (I don't mind if they go from icloud but would prefer them to stay on my macs)
Sorry don't use Aperture but I imagine it's fairly similar to iPhoto.
Photostream photos are automatically added to monthly events, so the photos may disappear from the Photostream stream but will stay in events. And yes you can add older library photo's to PhotoStream.
Unfortunately the photos do not stay in the montly events. I expected they will but had to learn they don't.
Is this on purpose or just a bug?
I see the same thing as Boghetta. I use Aperture, not iPhoto. Once my photo stream hit 1000 and I started taking pictures with my iPhone, the very first pictures in the stream deleted, as expected.
BUT, I have 'Automatic Import' checked under the photostream settings in Aperture (same as what one can do in in iPhoto, I believe). This feature creates monthly projects called "Oct 2011 Photo Stream," "Nov 2011 Photo Stream," etc. and pics from the stream automatically end up here. BUT now that pics are deleting from my Photo Stream, their imported counterparts are ALSO deleting from within these projects. Even if I move early photos out of these projects and into my own named projects/folders, they disappear as new content is added to my stream.
This is a major problem for me. The only fix is to turn off Photo Stream and go back to manually importing my iPhone pictures :-/ And worry that all existing pictures that have auto-imported from my stream since Oct. 14 are going to vanish someday. Hence, I am hesitant to take pictures with my iPhone (with wifi turned on) until this behavior is resolved.

Wow this is a concern. I was under the impression that those tidy projects being put onto my macbook were there to stay.
Infact I have been working through my imac library and putting the ones I want into the stream so that they are on both macs. Now I can expect them to dissapear?
Surely there must be a way to 'un hinge' them from the stream?
Is anybody here NOT having this problem?
Or does the majority agree with this behaviour?
I would be curious if it's just Aperture, of if the problem exists in iPhoto as well. I am surprised there are not that many people seeing the problem and reporting it. Perhaps we have to wait more weeks/months until peoples' photo streams fill up and they start to notice their imported pics are disappearing?
I only signed up to icloud a couple of weeksago so have not had thirty days yet.
What can we do here, is it a tagging thing, perhaps if the tags are changed it will stop the icloud do its thang?
I really like the idea of a 'dropbox' style photo sync going on, but obviously that needs to be permanent.
Boghetta, you are not alone. I too am experiencing your exact same problem. I first discovered it around a month ago, and was surprised to see that no one else had complained about it on the forums. This is the first time I have heard this mentioned. Perhaps other users are simply not paying attention to their imported projects. Thankfully I had not deleted the photos off my iPhone, so I could still re-import them manually by plugging in my iPhone. Apple really needs to address this issue. Surely this is not how they intended for this to work?
If you haven't saved your photos on your device but you have lost them in Aperture, here is one thing I discovered:
I rebuilt my Aperture database (hold option+command while doubleclicking on the Aperture library icon, and then select the middle option) because it was pointed out on another forum that the masters aren't really deleted from your computer - that is, they're still sitting down in the library somewhere.
My lost pictures were there when Aperture opened! Not in their original locations, but in a newly created folder called "Recovered Folder." This is one workaround, albeit kludgy, I can live with until Apple hopefully discovers the issue and fixes it.
