iTunes Match downloading on my iPad???

You don't. iTunes Match is not a streaming service. It is specifically designed to download the tracks to your iDevice.

I have the same question. I dont want my IPAD to fill up, is there a way to delete them off Ipad when finished

You can simply swipe to delete songs, or, you can just not worry about it. As this Macworld article says <http://www.macworld.com/article/163676/2011/11/secrets_of_itunes_match.html> your iPad will automatically delete older tracks that have not been listened to recently.

connect your iPad to your computer and in itunes the iPad will be there and you can delete old songs.

Apple is attempting to eradicate the distinction between "streaming" and "downloading" - how successfully they do it that remains to be seen. You're not supposed to be thinking about this anymore, it will all "just work" (keep your fingers crossed).

Essentially the difference between "streaming" and "downloading", at least as Apple sees it, is how long the music exists on your device. With streaming, you get a copy that only lasts as long as you play it, then it gets immediately automatically deleted. With downloading, it doesn't get automatically deleted. And with iTunes Match, it does get automatically deleted, but not until you need more space on your device - so instead of staying for a few seconds it may stay for weeks or months (and you can swipe to delete in the meantime, if you want).

It kind of splits the difference between streaming and downloading, you get the benefits of both.

I wish people would actually use the product being discussed before leaping to apple's defense. Here's what's happening: when you activate iTunes match on your iPad it immediately downloads as much music as will fit on our iPad until it is full. Then, If You want to add apps or any new content you have to go in and delete other stuff to make room for it otherwise you get a "not enough space" error message. I also notice the that mynipad's performance is sluggish when it is competely full so I prefer to leave some extra space on it. That extra space gets heogged by iTunes match as soon as I toggle the option to turn it on. The only option you have is to show your cloud music (hence the auto fill ) or not. Not very user friendly.

Music can be deleted from your iPad by swiping on it. But a better solution would be to have an option that let's you turn off the immediate mass download of all the music then you could leave 5gb of space for "streaming" your itunes matuc songs then delete them when you are done listening. So yeah, this doesn't "just work," its actually annoying. And I understand the whole difference between streaming and downloading but this isn't really a cloud service, this is remote storage which isn't as helpful. I find amazons cloud player to have the functionality I want. I uploaded the music and it plays and doesn't clutter up my hard drive. (ps it took 42 hours to itunes match 6000 songs and upload the 1700 unmatched. Amazon took the same amount of time to upload all 6000 songs - and it is free. Hmmm...)

That is absolutely incorrect. I have a 16 GB iPad2 and activating iTunes Match on the iPad does not mass download anything. Songs are downloaded when you select to listen to them.

I have used the product and I can say this is simply not correct. Downloading matched items is very much a user initiated action. It does not happen automatically.

I'm using iTunes Match on 2 desktop Macs, 2 iPads, and an iPhone - none of which did anything even remotely like what you're describing.

Turning on iTunes Match on the iPads and iPhones warned me that it would "delete" my music library - but it didn't actually do that. The files that were there after I turned match on were the same ones that were there before, and it only downloads additional tracks when I play them or click the download button.

How did you come to the conclusion that there's a "mass download" going on? What did you see that leads you to believe that? When you first turn on iTunes match it does download the "metadata" - the list of songs available on the cloud, but it doesn't actually download the music. It's just a list of track names and information (but apparently a few people get stuck on this step. This creates the misconception that it's a really long, time-consuming download when it's actually just frozen and all you need to do is restart the music app. Maybe that happened to you?).

If you go into "Settings" and click "General --> Usage" give it a minute to calculate the app storage, then click "Music" you'll get a little bit of information about how much space the music is taking up on your device. Or look at the graphical representation in iTunes. On my 3 devices I see the exact same amount of space currently used as the playlists that I had previously synced, with the exception of the iPhone - that's using slightly more, and easily explained by the 20 or 30 tracks that I've listened to from the cloud.

When you play the songs they download to your iDevice. This is normal.

It won't auto delete if you are out of space unless you are in the music app and request it to download or play a song that is not local. Then it seems to delete least played or oldest items. If you go outside of music, like to take a picture or download from the app store, you get an out of memory error and are pointed to settings to manage your space. Also, itunes will not sync more data over. So the download space is really only dynamic within the music application. Therefore, you will want to keep some free space available if you want to have space for video or picture taking.

On the computer, it defaults to streaming. Click on a song to play and it wil stream. Click on the cloud icon and it will download (also you can select the song and choose from a menu to download).

On an iphone or ipad etc., if always downloads. Items that are in the cloud have the cloud icon. If you play the song, even a portion and skip ahead, it will download the song. When it is downloaded you the cloud icon will go away which means it is taking up space. You can also go into your music settings where you turn icloud on and off to select whether you only want to see music that has been stored on the device. That choice helps when you want to find music to delete to free up space.

I'm hoping Apple gives us the choice in an update where we can make it behave like the computer and not auto download or download x number of songs so we don't fill up our devices with music unless we want to.

I find this behavior annoying. I wish we had the opinion to either "stream only" or "stream &amp; download".

But to resolve the music eating into your precious storage space, just go into Settings > General > Usage > Music (swipe to delete) or Edit, Delete.

That will get rid of all the downloaded content.
