Since upgrading to iTunes 10.5.1.42 I keep getting this box when opening iTunes:


Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads

Enter Account Name and Password

To use this machine for Automatic Downloads, enter your Apple ID and password.


How can I get this to stop?

Open iTunes preferences and go to the Store pane, then uncheck everything, esp. the Always check for available downloads. 🙂


oh yeah, VERY IMPORTANT... forgot to tell you that you have to be signed in to your itunes store account to make these changes, or to even see what the current settings are. If you are not signed in to your itunes account the whole pane will be dimmed and will show all boxes unchecked... HOWEVER, once you sign in to your account and open the store pane, you will be able to see the current settings AND the "Always check for available downloads box is checked by default.

Try this: sign in to your iTunes account; at the bottom of the account page, where it says "Reset all warnings for buying and downloading", click on the "Reset" button; sign out of your account; restart iTunes to see if you still receive the message box about using the machine for automatic downloads. Additionally, if you now go to iTunes preferences, the check boxes on the store pane will be dimmed.

Wow! This seems to have worked. I'm impressed. Usually it takes a little while after I've closed iTunes, I come back and open it back up when it asks for my password again. It has been very frustrating to say the least that everytime I open iTunes it asks for a password. If this works (which I think it has) I thank you very much tatin! You Rock!

I'm sorry it didn't solve your problem izzle22. It seems to have definitively fixed it for me but I had to do the reset on each of my two machines. I had the impression that I was resetting my entire account but doing it on one of my machines had no effect on the other. I had to do it separately on my other machine but the problem is now fixed on each of them. I guess it's necessary to do it on each machine which is authorized to download from the account.
