Does anyone know if you can use ATV with an external NAS drive? I have been looking into this online and it seems as though you have to have your computer on to stream to ATV. This seems like a needless step as I want to go direct from my NAS (WD My book world) where all my music/video is stored. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
A network drive will not work with an Apple TV without iTunes running on a computer. There is no way around it.
It can work - you can research a number of third-party solutions that enable an ATV to work with NAS.
You'd be better simply buying a different device that supported it than doing something which voids the warranty and leads to a string of potential problems.
Thanks for your opinion. In my actual experience, it can work very succesfully.
That's good to hear, however with respect you don't spend all that much time here trying to resolve problems.
Ok thanks for the heads up. I think as I havn't bought one yet i'll look to see what else is out there.
