A friend sent me a web link to a H.264 video and asked me to download and bring into FCP. I can view the video from the web address but don't really know how to download the file. I tried searching and saw some information about a converter, will I need some addtional software to download this file? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

The ability to and means of downloading files from a website will vary from site to site. Some sites simply won't allow you to download their content. If you can't find a "download" link, paste a link to the site, and we'll help.
If it's H264, FCP shouldn't need any additional software to be able to import it. But I would edit in ProRes, or another I-frame format.

FCP doesn't work natively with H.264. It should be converted prior to importing.

I was able to download the file, is there a recommend conversion setting I should use in compressor before importing to FCP? My project settings are:
use compressor. Check out the apple presets and find one that matches your sequence settings. But fwiw, HDV is not an ideal format to work with. You might consider converting everything to the appropriate flavor of prores. Much bigger files, but much easier to work with and renders and exports are usually much faster.
Would I convert upon capture or after? Thank you for the extra info.
if you can capture directly to prores, that's ideal.
The OP stated it was a file downloaded from the web, so capture wouldn't be an option.

I have resolved the web download question but was just asking a seperate question about getting future HD video I shoot to Prores. I was wondering if that was something I could upon capture or would do after with Compressor.
