Canon iRC 3580 Network Printer Problem

Hello,

I am using a Canon iRC 3580 printer connected to a network. With Snow Leoparda I was abble to print without any difficulties (even at the beginning was a pain to setup the printer...) I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and now nothing works. I have read accros a few websites there might be a bug or some problem with CUPS or the drivers maybe?

Any suggestions or help, please?

For any additional information, I have no backup (my fault...).

Thanks a lot!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

The imageRUNNER series have two drivers for Lion; the PS3 v3.40 driver and the UFR2 v2.30 driver. You would only be able to use the PS driver if your iR C3580 has the Postscript kit installed. In some regions this is an option rather than a standard inclusion.

So I suggest you install the UFR2 v2.30 driver which is supported on Lion. Here is a link to that driver from the Canon Australian web site.

With this driver installed you add the networked printer using the IP > LPD protocol. This requires you to enter the IP address for the printer, you can leave the queue name blank, and then browsing for the iR C350 UFRII ppd in the Print Using menu. With the print queue created you can then see if you can print.

Dear PAHU,

thanks for your answer. I think I followed all your instructions correctly and I still can't print. Maybe I made a mistake when browsing the iR C350 UFRII ppd in the Print Using menu, as I wasn't sure which file did you mean. I choose the UFR II Installer.mpkg, was this OK? Otherwise I have no clue about it,

Thanks!

Sorry for not making things clearer.

When you open the Print Using menu you need to click on "Select printer software" and with the window that appears, just type 3580 in the search section. This will short list the installed drivers and show you the correct one which I have highlighted.

Note that the other drivers shown is due to me having the Canon PS driver and Canon PPDs installed.

With the correct iR C3580 selected you can press the OK button and then the Add button to complete the queue creation.

Thanks again for making things clearer, I really appreciatte.

I haven't been able yet to setup the printer. I followed all your instructions, I also followed the instructions from the IT guys here at Uni, but I can't figure out what's missing. I don't know if I am not able to connect to the printer because of any network issue and I assume those are the correct drivers.

In the guideline the IT guys prepared for Leopard and Snow Leopard was all setup using CUPS and a https connection, does that anything to do?

Yes, this will be the reason you are having trouble. The UFR2 driver is not designed to work with IP connections other than LPD. So the need to use https, which is a secure web connection, will be the cause of the failure.

If there are Leopard and Snow Leopard users printing to this same iR C3580 then they must be using the Canon PPD rather than the UFR2 driver. So I suggest you download and install the Canon PPDs and then add the printer per the IT instruction. At the point of selecting the driver via the Print Using menu, instead of selecting the UFRII entry you can select the "Canon iR C3080/3480/3580" PPD as shown as the top entry in my image above. OK this selection and click Add to complete the queue creation. Now you should be able to print.

Thanks PAHU for your help,

but I still can talk to the printer, I get "Unable to connect to printer" when I try to print something.

I also spoke again with the guys from the IT Help, and they said it might be that the server is now broken, as I also explained to them your suggestions.

If you have any other idea it will be more than welcome.

If the web server is broken and IT require you to print via this server then surely they have to fix it? There are certainly other ways in which you can print to the copier, but it all relies on how the 3580 has been configured. Do you know if you are connected to the same IP subnet as the copier? And are you also physically close to the copier, so that we can check the network settings?

I am not really keen on servers, but definitely we have to print using the network.

I've spoken with an IT guy, and he told me I am connected to a different subnet than the printer. I am behind a firewall connected to an untrusted or unsecured network. But I used to access the printer (when I had Snow Leopard) through this server.

I am also close to the printer and have an user account. I don't know if I can see the settings, but I can try and if not I will ask.

Regards.

Thanks for this update. Based on what you have stated about the different subnet and untrusted network, then you will have to rely on your IT to get this working. What you can ask him is, in order to connect to this printer, are you connecting to a web/print server - hence the secure http URL. If you are then do you need to authenticate? And what happens when you type that URL into Safari - do you see the shared printer queue?

Could you also show me what you have configured for the queue? This can be found via System Information > Hardware > Printers. Select the iR C3580 in the top right pane and the bottom right pane will show all the print queue information. Copy this and paste back here.

And regarding the printer settings, don't worry about that for now. I think the issue is more to do with your Mac being on a different subnet to the copier.

Nov 30, 2011 3:23 AM in response to PAHU

I have asked them those things, I'll let you know when I get a response.

Meanwhile I think we connect through a server, don't know which kind and if there is any difference. People using Windows machines have to authenticate at the printer to print, meanwhile Mac users print directly.

When you type the printer URL you get the following (I have hiden the ipp numbers):

I am sorry, but I didn't understand what you meant for the queue and beside that, I wasn't able to copy-paste any picture in here (sorry again for that).

Thanks for the information. It shows that they are using a Netware server and using the IPP protocol for the print queue, so I would say that you need to be creating your print queue on the Mac using the IPP protocol. But then you mentioned about the Mac's printing directly to the copier, so I would question how you are meant to do this if your Mac is added to the untrusted subnet.

If you want to try creating another print queue on the Mac using IPP, then using the information they have shown, you would enter the IP address of the server in the Address field and then add the remaining information to the Queue field. The last action is to select the iR C3580 PPD in the Print Using field. To make it easier to understand what I have said I have added an image of the queue setup.

If this new queue still doesn't print then let me know.

Hello,

I got these answers from the IT Help to your questions:

"we are connected to one of our Novell servers using https, and it should then prompt your for a username and password, but this is the bit that is not working".

I hope this helps.

On the other hand, I wasn't able to print or to set up properly the ipp queue you meant, as the computer didn't recognize the settings or wasn't able to talk to the printer. I'll try that again tomorrow.

Thanks a lot.

Daniel.

Hi Daniel. I think the IPP configuration is failing due to the username and password pop-up not working. Since your Mac is on the untrusted subnet then it would appear that you need to authenticate so that you have access to the trusted subnet that the printer is on. And if your IT is saying that this system is not working then you will have to wait until you can get past this authentication, or get them to add your Mac to a trusted subnet so that you can have access to the printer.
