iPhone 4S viewfinder in video mode

I really like that you can send live video using the HDMI adapter from the iPhone 4S to a TV connected by HDMI, but I want to be able to do this without the UI elements showing up on the external screen. In other words, I want to be able to send live video to a TV and have it look just like recorded video, namely only the video and not the red button, etc.

There doesn't seem to be any way to do this under iOS 5 so I was wondering if anyone knows of an app that allows for this? Or maybe there is a way to do it under iOS 5 and I just don't know how to?

Your message give me great hope for my own related wish. Video Mirroring of the iPhone 4S screen is an awesome possibility to improve the experience of recording a sports event such as an hour long hockey game. There are a number of battery powered camera top displays in the size range of 7" to 10" that take HDMI input , such as the Lilliput 7-inch LCD monitor with HDMI input for $165 on Amazon. Does the iPhone 4S Camera app support video streaming so that a decent sized view finder could be used as an external, larger viewfinder while the video camera is in use, or do I have to use an iPad 2, or, better yet, the iPad 3 when ever it is released? Did you use the Apple HDMI output adapter or a third part adapter? The support threads about the Apple HDMI adapter have a huge, longstanding community of folks who, for one reason or another have failed to make it work.

Is there now, with perhaps a better hardware version that does not fall out at the least provocation, or new software such as iOS 5.01 make HDMI streaming a reasonable expectation?

Even though I am contributing to the hijacking of my own thread, I will give you my answer:

That thread you link to is for the most part people complaining the adapter doesn't mirror with the iPhone 4, which Apple states plainly. It's working well for me with my 4S. It has been dicey at times, perhaps related to the iPhone's orientation. I wish the phone would lock in portrait mode. Also, I believe the iPhone outputs 1080p30, so make sure your HDMI display device can work with 1080p30. That's a bit non-standard. 1080p is generally either 60fps or 24fps.

It seems an iPad will be a better solution for you. Why lug around an extra monitor and adapter? One hour of video will be about 10 Gbytes. Better get a big memory version of whatever you end up getting.
