Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
This is an question that has been asked before but I would like to get the most current and correct response. I have an iphone 4 with IOS 5.0.1 and a grandfathered AT@T plan with unlimited data. I am anticipating purchasing an ipad 2 next week. To tether the ipad 2 to the iphone 4 do I need to need to purchase the AT@T telephone with 3G? And also, can I do this without paying AT@T any more money for an extra data plan, personal hot spot, etc.?

If you have an i phone 4 with at&t then all you need is a wifi i pad. It will tether just fine. But at&t will want you to buy the tether data plan. It is an addItional $20 per month. They began monitoring and enforcing the tethered rule a couple of months ago.
And to add to your post, the OP will not be able to keep his unlimited data plan. The deal from AT&T is, he'll be able to buy a tethering option for an extra $20/month, and he'll have 4GB of data. If he goes over that, he'll incur additional charges.
