can i add extra memory to my 13" Macbook pro

you can do it yourself, instructions are provided in your owners manual which you can find here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macbookpro. You only have room for 2 ram sticks.

First make sure how much RAM your Mac can handle then purchase the correct type of RAM. Then I would find instructions on the internet on how to replace the RAM and judge if the project is too complicated to handle yourself, if it is then take it to the genius bar.

2x2gb. They put one 2gb stick of ram in each of the two slots.

Many people swear by the memory you get at macsales.com. A guide will ask you the model and year and give you recommendations for memory that are tested to be compatible with your system. Should be about $60 (plus tax and shipping) for 8 GBs in two sticks.

Others swear by crucial.com (same guide to the correct memory). Same price, basically.

on a side note regarding the air vs mbp debate..I am pretty sure this person (not you jwiseman ) asked the same question yesterday and I literally answered 20 of his questions, but it was under another handle.
