MacBook Pro 15 does not sleep while connected to a Thunderbolt display

I have a MacBook Pro 15 Late-2011. While it's connected to the Thunderbolt display, I use a wireless keyboard & magic pad with the MacBook closed.

The laptop doesn't go to sleep. I've tried using Command-Option-Eject & selecting sleep from the menu.

The same steps put my MacMini to sleep.

How can I get my MacBook Pro to sleep without having to disconnect the Thunderbolt cable?

Mac OS X-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
