iTunes 10.5.1 Home Sharing not working (Windows 7 64 Bit)

Looks like this is being reported by a fair few people on the forums - so just wanted to add my voice. Since iTunes 10.5 (same in iTunes 10.5.1) on Windows 7 64 Bit home sharing has stopped working. I have all firewalls disabled on my Windows machine, have tried all the normal suggestions of signing out and back into home sharing on all devices etc. iTunes Windows library does not show to other devices on the network including iPad, iPhone and Apple TV (all running latest firmware as of 19/11/2011). Not looking for any responses here from the community, as the problem clearly lies with iTunes on Windows. Apple please fix!

In the meantime the only way I can use my Apple TV is to sync purchases down to the iPad and then Airplay them to the Apple TV. Very annoying. Maybe time to look for an alternative for movie and TV downloads as Apple TV is pointless without it being able to connect to my Windows iTunes library and downloads..

Hi, I do not think that this is an network issue

- there are other streams around here focusing on this and in at least two of them the same problem accours with fixed lines (normal Ethernet)

- I once have a total lost of home sharing and run the network test build in in the ATV. that stated " no problems"

so I'm very convinced that this has nothing to do with networks ... there might be sideeffects of poor WiFi connections, but this is not the "root cause"

- I also have both platforms for iTunes (Mac OS and Windows 7) both platforms have the same isues ... so it is not an operating system problem

- I sometimes look streamed videos on an ipad with home Sharing ... ando also there are the problems... not so obvious as on the ATV but also very often...

.. so my conclusion is simply that this is an iTunes problem ..... and I'm still blame myself several times a day that I updated (for the very first time) both platforms (mac and Win) at the same time

nice weekend

So I have have been experiencing this issue on and off since I got my apple TV six months ago. Today I was able to find a pretty solid fix.

I have the latest ATV2 Firmware and iTunes 10.6.1.7. I'm using Windows 7 64bit. My ATV is plugged driectly into the internet switch (ie. no wifi).

From Control Panels/ Program I selected "Apple Application Support" and then selected "Repair" and let windows re-configure the program. I then did this for each Apple application I could find. The following is a list the applications I did this with:

Apple Application Support, Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, iTunes, Bonjour Print Services.

I re-opened iTunes and restarted Home Sharing.

Presto. Home Sharing has been working all day from various devices. I streamed movied and music with ZERO problems ever since. I even put my computer to sleep and then woke it up and home sharing was instantly availabe. I realize this may not work for many of you given the nature of these Apple software "glitches," but it may help some of you. Good Luck

Hi Jthammet

Many thanks. I did what you said and although it does not go on for as long as I would like, it is an improvment. Whereas it used to go off after 5minute to 30 minutes it now stays on for over 1 hour. I am also able to mirror with my Iphone now which I could never do. This cuts out at the time when Homeshare cuts out.

I am sure that the problem now is the broadband modem. I am going away for a month so will get another router to install along side the original.

As luck would have it I had a small glitch where my ATV would display an error when trying to playback certain media; however, I did notice that at no point did I have to restart Home Sharing and I resolved the issue by restarting my Apple TV. I checked it again this morning and late last night from my Mac Pro, ATV and iPhone and home sharing was still up and available (from my Windows machine.) I am convinved at this point that this problem has very little to do with the network itself (and I have read many others have also come to this conclusion.) I also had succes with turning off home sharing and opening my media in itunes and choosing my Apple TV as the output/display device. This works flawlessly every time. I was then able to use the remote control app on my iPhone to pause play fast foward etc. If Home sharing continues to be problematic, I will switch back to this method and just turn off home sharing all together.

One last thing... I also must restart my video app on my iphone if a significant amount of time passes between viewing a movie etc. I get an error that says I dont have permission to view the file. Simply restarting the app fixes that as it reestablishes a connection with the home library.

There are so many little indicators that point to this being purely an apple software glitch. Of course Apple won't admit it they'll just secretly fix it in a security fix and never say a word about it, which consequently is also how it gets boken =)

Well here is how I sorted it out. On my PC (vista)

I clicked start...settings...control panel...programs and features...then right clicked on the Bonjour program and selected repair. I then found that I could access home sharing on both my sons ipod touch and my wifes ipad 3.

Of course I had already turned home sharing on within itunes on my PC, ipod touch and ipad 3 before doing the above.

Don't forget to use the same apple ID on each device when you turn on home sharing.

Hope this helps someone.

So incredibly frustrated.

* all the home sharing turned "on" with the same id...

* no internet problems

* even tried to transfer libraries via ext HD

I cannot figure out how to get my libraries to all share together like one happy family. I see the files on the new computer but they don't open or dowload into my iTunes so I can have it all here - what the heck! It cannot be *this* difficult so I can have it all share. I've been through countless troubleshooting tips online, tried Facebook help and trolled through here to no avail.

I'm convinved it cannot or will not share - ever. I cannot even drag the files into my iTunes. Any other tips for sharing?

Well, i just found a workaround, at least for me,

I unistalled itunes 10.6.1.7 and then, downloaded an older version 10.6 from

http://www.filehorse.com/download-itunes-64/9982/

Automatically after installing, my airplay button appeared on itunes, and i could stream to my ATV2. I hope this solution works until Apple cares about the issue and releases a new itunes version. If it fails again I will post...

Saludos!

BTW... You can choose whatever version you need from the filehorse menu

I dont think its a IPv6 problem, at least in my case, my ISP doesnt provide ipv6 yet. Im still thinking its an itunes issue, after downgrading itunes 2 weeks ago, yesterday I updated the ATV2 to the latest ios5 version, i could see the airplay icon on itunes, so i gave it a try and updated itunes again, the icon is gone again, Ive tried different router configurations, but nothing seems to help, all the tricks and fixes are just not working..

I think ill give up and just use the atv as a netflix player, because thats all it does for me, y cant access my music, my movies,etc..

It is not IPv6 from your ISP. It is IPv6 on your PC which is running iTune for Home Share which is the problem. I had the exact same problem. I reinstalled iTune and it worked for 5-10 minutes and failed. But after I have disabled IPv6 on my PC's network controller, everything started working perfectly since then without a hitch. (See attached image for where IPv6 is disabled on the PC)
