Installing Printers on Intel iMac

Hi

This is my first post, so please be gentle...

I have just moved over from a G5 iMac to an Intel based one (from a PC a few weeks before).

I am trying to install a Lexmark X83 and Kodak Printer Dock 6000. I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from both companies, but when I go into the printer configuration utility neither can be seen. There appear to be folders and files installed in the "Library" on the HD.

The printer dock doubles as a camera USB connection, and I can import pictures from the camera. The Lexmark is a printer/scanner combo and I can get the scanner to work fine, so I guess the USB conection is good.

Both printers worked fine last week on my G5 Mac - would new drivers be required to work on an Intel Mac; I would have though the O/S abstracts that?

Any assistance would be gratefully received, and I am happy to post details of the drivers etc if that will help.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Take a look at this apple info page. Your printer may not be supported by Tiger. I had an HP Printer that would not work with my intel iMac, turns out it was just not supported by Tiger even though previous OS X versions were supported. Ultimately I ended up purchasing a new printer.

Hi

Thanks for the information - the G5 was running the same OS version (10.4.4 - completely patched up to date) as the Intel one is now. The only difference is the chipset (... oh, and that the printers don't work 🙂 )

I guess at the end of the day if the printer isn't supported (and according to the list it isn't) I'll have to do the same as you - shame as it was working last week.

Thanks once again for the response - have a good day.

Hi

Has anyone else experienced problems installing Laser printers to the Intel Mac
It would appear that there are no drivers currently available to support the Intel Dual Core processor, and the best that can be offered from the Printer suppliers (Epson in particular) is to wait.

This is hardly very helpful when the printer cannot be used!

Anyone any ideas for a work around apart from the obvious to use an Inkjet (which by the way works just fine)

Cheers!

When I bought my Mac from the Apple Store I asked about printers. I was told that HP doesn't network well and I should go for an Epson or a Canon if I plan to network. Thats what "they" said so please don't flame me. I hope they are wrong. I have an older 812C HP and I don't network it and have no need to yet.

I'm unable to use my HP2550 color laserjet printer (USB) on my new 20" intel iMac.

The printer shows up in print center but when I try to print, the document jumps from the print job list to the "completed" list without printing and I get an error message. I've installed (set-up) and un-installed (trashed the HP2550 folder) several times.

So now the intel iMac sits unplugged in a chair while I have gone back to using my old G5 iMac.

Evidently, there is a problem with printing on an Intel Mac that has nothing to do with the OS. I have the same OS 10.4.4 on my G4, G5 and Intel. My G4 and G5 print to my Smart Photo and the Intel one does not. The drivers from HP installs fine and my iMac sees the printer but the driver cannot be selected on the iMac only. You know that even though the OSX says it is 10.4.4 on both the PPC and the Intel, it is not the same code. It looks like Printer Drivers are different; Email version is different, etc. Very minor little differences but it is causing me big headache with printing.

The only workaround is to install the working driver on a G4 or a G5 machine and then try to transfer the user and user setting and data to the iMac Intel using a firewire cable. I do not have a firewire cable to try it and see if it is possible. It looks like many of the users who migrated from a G4 or G5 using a firewire cable got their printers working on the Intel iMac without any modifications which makes me think that the driver itself is not the problem, it is the software from the vendor that installs the driver does not know how to add the driver to the list of drivers to select from on Intel Machines - does this make sense?!!

Exactly what I expereinced wit the Epson Aculaser C1100. The Mac recognised the printer, even showing the status of the toner cartridges, but when asked to print, like you the document jumped to the completed list. I spoke to Apple, who said it was a problem with the printer, so I spoke to Epson, who informed me it was almost certainly a "software problem". They suggested wiping the H Disc and a complete reinstall of OS X, which I have done, then tried to reinstall the printer. Now all I get is a coninuous message teeling me that the data is being sent to the printer, but nothing further. Eventually I have to delete the document from the print spooler.

I went into the local Apple Store and spoke to one of the "geniuses" there. He knew immediately that it was almost 100% certain that the driver wasn't compatible with the Intel Processor, and he was dead right. I've since asked Epson to tell me when the drivers for the Intel Processor willl be available but they have no idea., just "sometime in the future".

The Aculaser works fine withh my Windows Laptop, and the real killer is that my inkjet works fine with the Mac. Apple must have been aware that they would have problems of this nature so why no warnings to customers?
