Q: iTunes Match -- Japanese Songs

I'm wondering if anyone has used iTunes Match with a library consting of a lot of Japanese music and if so how successful was the matching abilities? Does it only allow songs from the US store to match or does it pickup globally?

Only songs available for sale in the US iTunes Store will be matched.

A lot of my mainstream J-pop was matched.  Most of what was matched is NOT in the US store.

Did you use the United States version of iTunes Match and successfully match a lot of your Japanese music? That is, did you use a US credit card.

I am matching with a US iTunes account. Stuff that is only available in the Japan iTunes Store but that I own on CD (Like Tokyo Jihen or Yaida Hitomi) was matched. Other stuff that I actually bought from the Japan iTunes Store on a Japanese account, with a Japanese credit card (like Spangle call Lilli line), was uploaded. Weird!

I an using a UK iTunes account, my wife is Japanese, many of her CDs have titles and track names in Japanese characters. These work ok in iTunes on our PC, but give an error when trying to match, and do not even get uploaded.

So, most of these tracks are just not in the clou now for us.

Apple need to understand that people from one country do buy music from other countries. So each regional version of iTunes match needs to handle all international character sets.

Apple is usually good at multilingual, so this is a surprising miss for them.

iTunes Match will only match your music against the regional store you have an account with. US iTunes Store customers get matched against the US iTunes Store, etc. If the music does not match then it will be uploaded.

You're problem is apparently different. Metadata (ID3 tags) have very little, if any, effect on the match process. So if the songs are getting labled as "ineligiblel" you need to look at the bit rate and file size of the songs as to the possible problem. It's not the metadata causig the problem, since that is just text.

Hmm, that is what I would expect. But for the 761 songs ripped as apple lossless directly from the CDs, and identified in iTunes on a Japan account, these have album names or song or artist names populated in Japanese.

When I now use a UK iTunes account to Match my collection of around 4,000 songs they all either match or upload, except the Japan text songs, which all show "error".

That behavior is a little odd. The tracks should at least upload. I'd suggest try converting them to AAC or MP3 from ALAC and run iTM again and see what you get. What encoder did you use to create the ALAC files? iTunes, or something else?

Something else I just thought of. What bit-rate are the ALAC files? Standard CD bit-rates are 44/16; iTunes Match supports up to 48/24. Anything above that will get marked as "ineligible."

Simply ripped in iTunes as Apple Lossless, iTunes recognised them and filled in all the tags as per usual. Just get the "error" and cloud icon with an exclaimation mark when try to Match.

Interesting. We can at least rule out the encoder as the source of the error. According to the KB article I posted a link to above a trouble shooting step is to import a new copy of the songs. I'd suggest deleting them from the iTunes library and adding them back in and let iTM do it's thing. See if you still get the error.

Generral FYI, to complete tags (and find album covers) iTunes uses the Gracenote database. Just because iTunes found the tag info, does not mean the tracks are available in the iTunes Store.

Don't know if that's the case with your files, but... "Song files over 200 MB will not be uploaded to iCloud."

This is true but would not cause the tracks to be identified with the "error" Status, as the OP states. They would be identified as "ineligible."
