    Finder->Preferences->Sidebar->uncheck Airdrop should work

    As long as you do not highlight it in the sidebar, it is not active and no one can find your Mac. And there wouldn't be any accidental file sharing because you would get a dialog to accept or deny the file (IF you had Airdrop highlighted and therefore active).

    how would this work, to turn off, if already active? just seems like this would remove it from sidebar, so you wouldn't see it, but it would still be active. but how do you literally turn off this functionality, once it has been activated. i made the mistake of clicking in the sidebar, just to see how it worked. also thought it might be a quick/easy way to send  a photo to my iphone from a desktop computer that i do not synch with. i don't need or want this turned on, unless i need/want to use it. should be obvious way to turn on and off.
