I personally feel that Apple could release a more limited version of Siri for older devices. It seems profound to me that they wouldn't go ahead and incorporate this feature into the iOS of all other devices that are able to run it. Give it to the older devices but only as dictation. This keeps the more desirable functions of Siri exclusive to the 4S but gives the essential dictation to older devices.

Loyal customers deserve to have this.

like kevin, i have been a loyal Apple customer for many years now and for the first time ever, feel Apple has turned it's back on me in favour of selling a newer hardware model.

Here is my solution:

Take a phone made by Samsung, add Google to the equasion, release a Nexus 4.0 with everything apple keep from us (including speech to text dictation) and say thanks apple, but if you're really going to be like this, i no longer support you.

I take it the siri app (which i did see before but only after apple had launched the integrated siri) was an 'app as opposed to an integral software piece?

I know i am one of millions who are frustrated by this latest move by apple and i am confident that i am going to stop being a loyal apple customer if siri dictation is not brought to older devices soon.

There are much more functional handsets on the market now. Android has it's security issues but these are being addressed and let's not forget Steve Wasniak (Apple Co-Founder and chief Engineer at Apple) was quoted as saying that the Android phones on the Market these days are so much more advanced that iOS; until he then released a press statement saying that he had been misquoted....

I also have been a vocal advocate of their products and i have swayed many people over to apple products but now i am going to refuse to and condemn apple to my friends and family as just another conglomerate multi-billion dollar industry.

Moves like these, together with the passing of apple's founder and figurehead will result in apple - the company that has until recent years always played second fiddle to Microsoft - sliding in one direction, down.

Dear Sir,

Thanks so much for your thought-provoking and intellectual input. Unfortunately -and as educated as your input is and in all of the glory of your correct punctuation, this is actually a discussion about the fact the few of us having this discussion think that Siri should be included in iOS 5. So then, given the fact this discussion is primarily about aforementioned agenda, your comment has no place here.

Many kind regards.

Yes. Because it is software. Imagine how easy it would be for apple to appease their existing device owners by enabling them this accessibility?

This isn't a fixed ariel, a hi res display, a louder speaker, this is an essentail software tweak that is easy for them to make available to everyone and brings amazing accessibly to an already amazing smartphone it's absurd they haven't!

You may buy it for the A5 Dual core processor which is reportedly twice as fast as processing speeds as the iPhone 4 is, the 7MPX camera and the improved, louder speakers as well as an option to have a 64GB storage capacity.

I hear you! and what's more, i agree!

Have a look at the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tab. It even comes with a USB port and Java!! Wow... Something Apple holds back? and for why? Also comes with a 2 year warranty. I'm making the transition this Chrismas. no more apple for me.

Hello Michael black, I'm Matthew black! 😝

I don't really care too much to be absolutely honest as I'm going to be walking around the UK without money, technology or any mod cons for the next 3 years soon! so i really don't care about all this stuff lol. Apple have done wrong here though and on my return i won't buy any of their products and also i will recommend against them with any recognition i receive from my adventure. and I'm very persuasive!

I'm not sure if the posters here are aware, but Siri WAS available on the iPhone 4 and 3 for at least a year before the 4s came out. I ran Siri for about a year on the iPhone 4. Siri was a free app you could download from the App store like anything else, then when the 4s came out Apple intentionally broke it for all of the iphone 4 Siri users and removed it from the App Store so it could no longer be downloaded. I still have the Siri App loaded on the my iPhone 4 and it starts up but then gives an error message about being unable to connect to the server. Apple didn't even have the courtesy to put a message that says Siri is no longer available unless you buy the 4s, we just get a server broken error (foolishly I thought initially it was just temporarily broken).

It is extremely frustrating to lose long-standing functionality purely for the sake of Apple's marketing whims and profiteering. To think that I moved all my computers from PC to Apple to avoid monopoly tactics only to see them worse on the Apple side (another example iDvd removal from iLife on the imac). As a recernt "all in" convert to Apple, I have been a vocal advocate of their products, but it's difficult to remain an advocate given the way they treat their customers.

Correct, it was not integrated, you needed to launch the app but after that it was very poweful and the speech recognition was amazingly accurate. It was very useful as a standalone app, so it's a shame they took it away even as just an app. It still would have given them a marketing hook for the 4S if they offered it integrated only on the 4s and left it as an app on all others (which still isn't fair because I'm sure the 4 could handle integrated, but at least it would be a reasonable compromise that would prevent alienating customers by taking away existing functionality and then asking for a ransom (4S) to get it back).
