changing desktop background - picture format needed?

hi - I read some of the earlier posts on people unable to change their background picture. I repaired my disk permissions, but what I notice is that some .jpg's in the iPhoto folders will respond and show up as the desktop picture when clicked, and a lot of others won't, even though taken with the same camera / resolution etc. What is the reason for this? Do I need to run all my images through some formatter to get then in shape to be used as the desktop background? OSX 10.5

thanks,

The files can be jpg or other formats - http://macs.about.com/od/switchersnewusers/qt/wallpaper.htm

What is the typical file size and resolution of the pictures? Just guessing, but there may be a file size (MB/GB) limit.

Make a copy of the pics you want to use & put them in a separate folder. Then see if they will all work. If not, reduce the pics height/width or resolution (resolution only needs to be 72 pixels/inch) somewhat to reduce the file size. Now see if they all work.
