My iphone 3g is not jailbroken. I am wondering if all the apps currently on my phone will remain there or not. I hope I have put all required details.
Software version: 4.2.1.

If you sync before you Restore you won't lose anything.

If I sync, as I always do anyway, how do I get the phone back to it's original state after restore.

Normally a Restore gives you the option to reinstall your backup. If it doesn't, BEFORE you sync for the first time right click on the iPhone's name in the list on the left in iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup".
