Poor quality Video, picture pixelated using apple tv

Try with another source other than BBC iPlayer, it may be the source, what's it like with an iTunes video from the movie app.

Doubt it's the router, just the limitations of Airplay.

The video will be streaming to the phone over wi-fi then back to AppleTV2 from the phone.

Is this from the iPlayer app (which i don't think does Airplay) or the Safari version?

...and iplayer has always had iffy SD quality - assume that's what you're playing back. I use iplayer on my Sony Blu Ray so have never tried via Airplay.

You may not get that much better quality to be honest but worth trying all options.

I've just carried out a few tests using iPlayer.

I have a largish house and use a number of wifi base stations to compensate for both the distance and the fact that I often have quite a lot of network traffic.

At first I found the quality of the video very good, but I then switched the networks the devices were using so that instead of using the nearest base station they were using the furthest one away, at which point I got pixelation too.

So my solution, which may or may not be of interest to you, is to run an Ethernet cable to the opposite side of the house from base station 1 to base station 2 and setting base station 2 to bridge the network created by base station 1.

Sounds as though Airplay does have rate adaptive video quality in this case?

It's probably also worth noting that this was via the double tap and swipe AirPlay method using full screen, since the iPlayer App doesn't grant you an AirPlay option itself. When using an app that does support AirPlay, the video will sometimes buffer for a moment or two which suggests that method doesn't have adaptive streaming.

I just tried on the iPhone 4s from Safari on an n and a g wi-fi connection and no difference - fairly low quality and pixellated. Interestingly though it seemed to buffer the stream either on the phone or AppleTV allowing rapid navigation.
