group messaging since iOS 5 update

I strongly dislike the group messaging feature, where all recipients in a group text receive replies from everyone. I had this fixed a long time ago by simply turning this feature off. Since the update (not sure if it started with iOS5 or 5.0.1), it doesn't seem to matter if my group messaging is on or off. Those replying to a text sent to multiple people still see everyone's replies. It drives me crazy. My sisters and mom sat around using 4 phones trying different settings to figure it out. It was impossible. Turning of imessage seemed promising until I realized I stopped receiving their texts completely when I did that. Is this a bug that is going to be fixed soon?! Apple should be smarter than this...
