sound not working, but itunes works

i dont know what happened. im assuming i pressed some configuration of keys and did something. itunes works, plays music, if you select a ringtone it works, but only for the preview and not when my phone is ringing. no other sound effects works. what gives? i turned it off and back on and nothing.
