iTunes menu items grayed out

Yeah, I get the same when updating song info. After I force quit, some the changes have stuck, some don't. Any help gratefully received.

I have this same problem and it's very annoying.

What happens is this: I'll be happily editing my library when, after an edit, it suddenly becomes impossible to select "Get Info" to edit tracks. The menu item is grayed out and Command-I just gives a warning beep.

At this point, it is also impossible to Quit iTunes as that menu item is also grayed out and Command-Q also gives a warning beep.

One thing I have found is that I can still quit iTunes by right-clicking on the dock icon, obviating the need for a force quit.

Another symptom: the iTunes dock icon is constantly jumping up for things that it didn't used to jump for.

I've tried deleting the preference file. I haven't tried moving the library and library.xml files and rebuilding them, mostly because I've got 380GB of music on an Airdisk and it would take an eternity to rebuild the library.

I'm really fed up with this and have no idea what to do.

For what it's worth, the behavior started on my old machine running Snow Leopard and has continued after a clean install (albeit with iTunes information copied over) on a new machine running Lion (now 10.7.3).

Just to chime in, I also have the problem with Get Info greyed out, even though a track is selected. Quitting and starting iTunes back up corrects it for me also. Sometimes Quit is available, other times it isn't.

This is also happening to me. Sometimes I have edited so many items in my library that it's hard to tell if the force quit has lost or preserved changes.

Why is this happening? If the parameters are explained, many of us can adjust our work habits. What is upsetting iTunes so?

I now have 10.7.4 and iTunes 10.6.1, but the problem goes back to whatever version of iTunes was current when Lion was rolled out.

Sigh . . . I guess I'll force quit again, since posting this has not yet regained access to the contents of the menus for me.

Same behavior. Usually after editing movie metadata using AppleScript. Commands are still available from the dock menu, just not the top menu.

I used to have the same problem. I've solved it by throwing my iTunes Preferences away.

Quit iTunes and navigate to your Library folder (hold the alt key while the Go To menu is open in the Finder's menu bar). Open the Preferences folder, then move or rename the file com.apple.iTunes.plist. Better don't delete it yet in case you want to reuse it later. Open iTunes and redo your settings and login, as necessary.

In case it doesn't work add these steps:

- disconnect your iDevices

- open Activity Monitor and also quit iTunes Helper

- move some of the files with similar names aside the same way
