My PC won't open itunes any more. It says "The iTunes library.itl is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file."

This is since my computer decided to go into standby on its own and not turn on again for 2 days. It's now working fine but iTunes won't open. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes but that has mad no difference. The message also comes up if I try to plafe a track from my "itunes media" folder. What can I do?

If Dave's tip doesn't do it for you then perhaps this is the one you need...

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.

If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownership from an account with administror privileges.

The NAS is mapped as a drive letter.

My first problem is to make it start at all. I re-installed, but that didn't solve it. Maybe I should uninstall and delete all itunes in the registry? I have deleted the Itunes database in the local my music directory, but it doesn't help.

Second problem it then to make it work with the NAS. It has worked, and I might have made an error that killed it.

But first thing first - to make Itunes make a clean start. Can you help there?

Thanks a lot, before your answer I deleted the not only the content of the my documents Itunes folder, but also the folder itself.. then Itunes at last asked for the location of the database, or if it should create a new one.

But I guess your great shift-key tip could have avoided that.

The odd thing - or maybe the root cause - was when I tried to make a new itunes folder in the my documents/mymusic folder, I needed administrative rights to do that, I didn't need that for the my documents folder..

Thanks a lot for your help. So how do I give you points? Or can't I, as I didn't write this question in the first place?
