iTunes 10.5 / 10.51 crashing? You're not alone!

😠 😟 😢

If iTunes is crashing for you after an upgrade to 10.5 or 10.5.1, you are not alone. It's happening for users on 10.6.x and 10.7.x...new Macs and older Macs...etc. It happened to me with the upgrade to 10.5, and I fixed it, but I had hoped that 10.5.1 would resolve the problem. However, I have the same problem!

Can we use this thread to provide a go-to place for troubleshooting, possible solutions, etc? It would be really helpful as theses problems keep coming back for many of us. It would also help newbies find answers.

For example...

Typical problems people are having...

1) Crashes right after startup (connecting to Genius online) (that's my issue) or won't launch at all?

3) Large iTunes Library/Permission problems?

Possible fixes?

1) Run Disk Utility to fix permissions?

2) Backrev by copying files from Time Machine Backups?

com.apple.itunes.plist

iTunes application

iTunes Library.itl

3) Rebuild library by deleting iTunes Library.itl, reopening Itunes and adding all content back in to library?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I just wiped my hdd and installed iOS Lion, iTunes comes up with "iTunes cannot be opened because of a problem". I have deleted and re-installed iTunes at least 3 times. I created a new user account and tried opening iTunes, same message. I also "checked permissions" and "fixed permissions", tried to open iTunes, same message. I don't know what or if I'm doing something wrong. The computer is new there is nothing but the operating system on it. Any ideas? The error report that gets sent to Apple is the folllowing:

I'm pretty sure I isolated my problem: the iTunes Library file.

Now, it's a major pain to recreate the library from scratch (for one thing, you'll lose all your playlists). But if all else fails, try it.

If your media files are not in the default location, import them back into iTunes with File > Add to Library

You can restore playlists from your idevices (this restores just the playlist, not the files themselves). Connect your device, and in iTunes, navigate to the playlist on your device. Go to File > Library > Export Playlist. Save it in a folder on your desktop/hard drive. Do the same for your other playlists. Then you can use File > Library > Import Playlist to add the playlist back in to your iTunes library. Note that Smart Playlists come back in as regular Playlists.

Froadminman, if you are using an old/restored iTunes library file, try deleting that as I have mentioned in the above post. Your error message seems to indicate an issue with the library file too! Move the library file outside of its normal place, delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file, and do a clean install of the latest version of iTunes.
