burn dvd's from mac won't play on DVD player

I'm getting an error 'can't read disk' from my samsung bd-p2550 when trying to play a moving i created on my Mac Mini. I've created the movie using iPhoto to create a slide show movie. i renamed the resulting file from M4V to MP4 and burned to a DVD-R disk. inserted into the samsung dvd player and got the error message, even though the samsung is supposed to support mp4.

next i downloaded FLV Crunch and converted the MP4 to VOB(mpeg 2) format. burnt to another disk, same error.

i did some google searching and they talk about VIDEO_TS directories (which i see on my store bought movie dvd's). is there some directory structre that makes movies playable on a DVD player connected to a TV?

i can play the dvd's on my Mac Mini from the internal DVD drive, so that seems to indicate the file structure is ok.

Any other thoughts?

thanks!

I believe that as far as iLife is concerned, there are only two ways to make such a DVD playable on a DVD player that :

1. Make a DVD project with iDVD

2. If the DVD player supports MPEG-3 CDs, to format it as a music CD with files in folders it can browse.

#2 does not appear to work for your DVD player as it does not appear to support MPEG-3 CDs.

Playing from the Mac Mini means nothing as far as the file structure. Most DVD and CD players do not have a Mac operating system to read data on them.

Why use mp4 if it to be played on a DVD Player?

Save the project as a DV mov file and burn the DVD again in the usual DVD format of mpeg2.

Hi

There are two kinds of DVDs that You can burn

• Data-DVD - as result of just popping in a new DVD disk so it show up on DeskTop/Finder and store files on this. After it's burned - it can not play on any DVD player at all - however You try to structure it.

• Video-DVD - the one that are made by using an video-encoding program as iDVD or Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro.

If a Video-DVD doesn't play on other DVD-players or even the Mac that burned it usually depends on

• Use of Cheap DVD brands as Memorex, NoName etc. - I only use Verbatim

• Type of DVD used - DVD-R plays on more DVD-Players as old ones doesn't always play DVD+R and +/-RW is to be avoided at all times

• Burn Speed - I set it down to x4 as it will result in far less Burn Errors and My DVDs plays well in most DVD-players

Bengt,

Very helpful. Wasn't aware that there were two types of DVD structure. it appears that most software creates what you refer to as Data DVD and the various file types are supported by computer DVD drives.

What i need is the specialized Video DVD software that you mention above. Most people don't mention the modifier video or data in their DVD software. I got a copy of iDVD and it burnt a file that WAS playable on my samsung DVD player.

Thanks for the help and problem solved.
