iweb discontinued

I don't know if Apple pays attention to this part of their website, but I just want to say that I'm very upset that they've abruptly discontinued iWeb. I rely on it to create my websites and don't know what I'm going to do if something happens to the iWeb program I'm currently using. Can't they sell their technology to some other company who could continue to market it so that customers could continue to use it????

It is now common knowledge that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.

On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.

I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.

Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

The Web has changed a lot since iWeb was created and now there are more options available with more to come. I'm guessing Apple likley would have had to spend too much to retool iWeb or iCloud to keep it alive for such a niche-y user base. I personally believe iWeb (with some TLC) can still live without MobileMe as a standalone application with a slightly different focus - just probably not profitable enough for Apple's likes. BUT, like you, I keep wishing for Apple to make an announcement for the new iWeb Pro OR that iWeb has been sold to a very Mac-friendly company. I mean, everything's for sale, right?

Thank you, all, for your replies to this post. // Luckily, I never used Mobile Me (just couldn't understand it) and have always posted using an FTP to an outside host. So I don't THINK that having Mobile Me go away will impact me (since I'm not tech savvy, I could be wrong about that). Since iWeb works great for creating webpages for an "outside" website, I just don't understand why Apple would treat this technology as if it is suddenly worthless. Like Terry, I am SO hoping that they sell or give this technology to another company or even a charity that could continue to sell it. I don't care if its features are never "improved" and it stays the same forever. I just want to be able to buy/get it when I need it. BTW, by doing away with iWeb, Apple has just ensured that I WON'T be buying new computers from them for years and years and years. I'm going to hang on to this old one as long as I can so that I don't lose access to iWeb. Shame on Apple for their arrogance and for their treatment of loyal customers.

When I was 70 I went back to school to learn web design. I found iWeb to be the perfect solution. I am putting the history of art and architecture around the world online open to every one. I have about 1,000 pages that all have to be moved. I am using Godaddy and they are on a steep learning curve so lots of their people do not really know how to FTP iWeb. The most accurate person said to use publish to Folder instead of using FTP and he seems to be correct.

I hope that Apple is sued over the very idea of putting what I suspect is a huge problem for those of us who have created huge websites. I started the transfer in October and things are still not working correctly.

Does anyone know of anything being done about this?

What exactly do you mean "Is anything being done about this?" Is anything being done about what and what do you expect Apple or anyone else to do?

If your website is not working as expected and you have uploaded to GoDaddy, then this is a server problem really and you need to speak to GoDaddy about this. You need to look at where you have uploaded your site - are all the files in the correct place etc. Check this out first and speak to GoDaddy.

Again, thank you to everybody who's taken the time to reply to this post. I wasn't sure that anybody would pay any attention to it.

kbolman, I feel awful for you!!!!!!!! My website is very long, too (500-plus pages and growing). While I do not have to transfer all of these pages at this time (because I chose to use FTP and ignore Mobile Me all along), I'm in a panic over what will happen to the site in the future. At some point, my computer will die and I'll no longer be able to get iWeb for my replacement computer and that means I won't be able to add new pages/information to the site. At that point, the site will be as good as dead, too. It's going to happen to your site, too. Apple has abandoned everybody who trusted them by using iWeb.

Cyclosaurus, thank you for the multi-boot system suggestion. I've looked at the instructions for it and, unfortunately, there's no chance that I will ever be smart enough to create anything like that! My only hope is if a local computer store can do it for me. I will have to look into it.

Ethmold, thank you for confirming that MobileMe's demise will not impact my ability to create pages using iWeb. And when kbolman said "Does anyone know of anything being done about this" I THINK he or she means is anybody suing Apple over what they've done. I don't know if anybody is suing, but if there's a class action lawsuit over this, count me in.

I know that the kings in the castle don't really care about us customers, but I'm writing letters to urge Apple to give or sell iWeb/iDvd to another company or charity. If anybody else wants to do this, here's the info that I have. I don't know whether the names that I have are still the men in charge, but it's all that I could find:

Tim Cook, CEO

Eddy Cue, Sr. VP Internet Software and Services

Scott Forstall, Sr. VP iOS Software

I expect Apple to keep iWeb running. The time I have put into creating a site that wlll be used by the parents, who play with their children, the advantage the information and images gives to history teachers. This has taken years to build and it is now taking months to move my site to another host.

I think Apple is being irresponsible because I have spent a lot of time going to the Apple store here and they do not have any advice or knowledge of the problems caused when I attempted to FTP my huge site to Godaddy.

Apple should pay me for the expense of moving the site and for the time.

This is such a betrayal of loyal customers by Apple. (And, yes, Zen_learner, it has already happened. Just go into an Apple store and ask them if they still sell iWeb.)

I urge others who are upset by this to send a snail mail letter to Apple's headquarters (I posted the address above). They'll probably ignore them, but it's even easier for them to ignore emails.

There is absolutely no reason why they can't continue to provide iWeb to Apple customers and especially to those of us who have spent years (and, in my case, more than 1,000 hours) building a website and gaining followers. If they don't want to provide iWeb anymore, they should turn the technology over to another company who would appreciate earning a little extra money by selling it to customers like us.

Shame on them for abandoning us.

To the people who relied on Mobile Me as a host for their websites and who are now baffled as to how to post their site(s) somewhere else, here is the FTP and host service that I use:

1. I use FETCH as the FTP. An FTP, as far as I can figure out, is kind of like a car that you take when you want to go somewhere. You use it to transport your website pages to a company that will put them on the world wide web for you. It used to cost $10 to buy, but it looks like it's $29 now. Their website is: fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/buy

2. I don't use GoDaddy, so I don't know how that works. I use Network Solutions to host my websites. (Yes, I'm about to launch a second site, so Apple has really punched me in the gut with their terrible decision.) Sign up for their "Web Hosting" service. It will cost you more than $300 per year.

I have to go through a lot of mumbojumbo to do my transfers, but if anyone else out there decides to use the Fetch and Network Solutions combo and wants me to try to describe how I do it, let me know.

Good luck to everyone. We'll all need it.

iWeb is still sold at the Apple Store via iLife '11 suite.

Apple has decided they will no longer sell software that ships via DVD's in the future. All apps will be downloadable via the App Store application and iWeb isn't found at the App Store.

Since you pay money to your new "server" (no more Mobile Me in the future) for their services. You have to ask them for help in publishing your iWeb pages.
