Is is possible to track a stolen MacBook Pro?

I let my sister borrow my MacBook Pro last weekend, and it got stolen out of her apartment during a party. If I haven't previously installed any kind of tracking software, is there any way I can use the serial number to track down my computer? Or use it to know if someone is trying to pawn off my computer or sell it on Ebay or some other site?

No, Apple doesn't do that. Apple doesn't put itself into the middle of any law enforcement business in which it isn't a directly involved party. The only two instances I've heard about (both reported in these forums) in which Apple flagged stolen Macs when they were brought in for service have involved Macs that were taken from Apple Stores in break-ins — i.e., the machines in question were Apple's own property, stolen and later sold to unwitting buyers.

Hey I am sorry to hear about your loss. If I were you I would report the serial number to police and file a report. Also, go on Craigslist and search your area to see who might be dumb enough to sell your mac on there. Police have been able to apprehend theives and recover macs by this simple trick. If you do see your mac being sold on Craigslist then schedule a time to buy the mac from the person who stole it, and let police know because they will go with you to catch the crook in the act. Good luck.

I use an app called iAlertU. It basically is a car alarm for the mac and it has saved my mac from being jacked in the past.

Good news is that since the Police were willing to get to the correct person at apple... evidently it took 3 phone calls and 5 people... my serial# has been noted as a stollen computer in Apple's system. If it turns up at apple for service, the police will be notified and justice could be served.

Thanks for the advice. I will check Craigslist too. I have already bought a replacement but would love to get my old one back and the theif see consequences.

the zeobit software app called Mackeeper has an anti theft facility which will poll a website when it connects to the internet. If the mac is reported stolen, the app will take a pic and send IP address, the location of the IP address according to the ISP DNS and email you a photo of the user. Mine was stolen from my apartment a couple of days ago. I am monitoring the Zeobit website - no trace yet, but I am hopeful. unfortunately for me, I always set very strong passwords and harden my OSX because I handle confidential data from work. they will need a good password cracker, unless they try to sell it through a pawnshop. Queensland Police have a scheme where pawn shops check serial numbers on their database for gear marked stolen. It seems good security configs can sometimes work against you :-/
