No sound coming from my iPhone 4s.

I just recently got an iPhone 4s. I am getting no sounds coming from it though. The ringer works, but all other sound is off unless the headphones are plugged in. This goes for recorded movies, music I purchased, youtube videos, the sound effects when I slide the login button. Everything is silent. I have restarted it a few times now, but to no avail. Even the sound buttons on the side do nothing; now they don't even bring up the sound volume overlay.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks!

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

I should add another odd wrinkle. Siri works fine. When I bring it up, the volume buttons on the side adjust the volume of her voice, but after I close the program, it all goes back to silent.

Also, I don't have the mute button on, just to get that out the way now. :-)

I had the exact problem (iphone 4)! I didn't get any sound through the speakers. I could hear music/sounds with my earphones plugged-in but not without having them pluged-in (not even the clicks from the lock screen). The only sound I could hear without the earphones was the ringer when I would receive phone calls.

I searched on the internet for a fix and none of the solutions worked for me like cleaning the headphone jack with a Q-tip, cleaning the doc connector with tissue or paper, inserting a needle in the top microphone whole etc... until I found an easy solution:

1 - Plug-in your earphones

2 - Open the "ipod/itunes" app on your phone

3 - Play music

4 - Unplug your earphones

5 - Repeat these 4 steps about 3 or 4 times on a row. If after doing this you don't hear sound, don't freak out! It's normal. Don't forget that your iphone automatically pauses your music when you suddently unplug your earphones while the music is still running. Just press the "PLAY" button and voila!

I hope this helps!

I have tried this and it didn't work. It has this weird issue where when the earphones are in, the ipod app has a volume slider. When the headphones are pulled out, the slider goes away.

I hadn't responded in a while, because it sort of fixed itself the next day. And everything seemed fine until about 3 days ago.

I ended up doing a hard reset and restoring to factory defaults. Still no go. So I ended up taking it to the Apple store and they replaced it. A friend of mine said that he had the same issue with his phone a while back and was able to get the sound back by prodding the usb tab thing in the bottom of his phone with a fork until it kicked out of "dock mode". I opted against doing that because I didn't want to do anything to mess with my warranty.

Good luck!

i have just had the same problem with my white iphone 4s 32gig running ios 5.0.1 i took it to my carriers shop (vodafone ) and they could not fix it they told me they could send it off or i could take it to an apple store and they would fix it or replace it there and then. the only problem is that the nearest appple store is 1 1/2 hours away (manchester, england) and i was wondering if anyone has found any solutions to this problem as i will not be going there for a while.

some more info : my iphone started doing this gradually over the last few days but now it does it all the time and it is really starting to annoy me !

Hi Benny,

I took my phone to the apple store. They looked in the charging port to see if it was dirty then they looked in the ear phone portion. Of course the phone was clean cause I use an otterbox.

The apple rep. said that they have never seen this problem before. So I guess they said that it was a hard ware problem and gave me a new phone. No hassle at all from them.

I have not loaded the new IOS 5.0.1. cause I dont want the same thing to happen again(not sure if it is that though), so I'm just ganna wait til the next update is ready.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Having the exact same issue, iPhone 4S, ios 5.0.1, siri works fine, calls are fine, but sound volume unavailable unless I use headphones. I tried the plugging in/plugging out of headphones 5-6 times while playing music and it didn't work. I also tried a system restore and that didn't work. Looks like I'll be joining the rest at the Apple Store.

Hi all. Just wanted to report my 32gb 4s is experiencing this same thing... Starting yesterday I think. Perhaps it started when I plugged it into a new iLuv speaker dock. Been on 5.0.1 since it was released, no issues until now. I'm going to try troubleshooting and I'll report back. Though I do have sound in FaceTime, phone calls.... But not in videos or iPod app.

Well it looks like I'll be heading to the Apple Store like y'all. I tried erasing all settings, restoring a backup, and anything else I could think of.

Interesting points:

-this is definitely not related to the new iLuv dock we got since my wife's phone (same model) has had no issues.

-like all the rest, the speaker works fine with Siri and speakerphone, but nothing else.

-if I pull it off any dock (I have several different models) while playing, the phone's speaker will play for 2-3 seconds before cutting out.

-while playing on my Bluetooth headphones, I can see the output selector... Only 2 options: "Motorola Headphones" or "Dock Connector". Now isn't that interesting? It doesn't even recognize the internal speaker as an option anymore.

Anyhow, I may wait to get it replaced until after 5.0.2 comes out just in case.

Cheers

No sound coming from my iPhone 4s.
